"Time as a Gift"
A young woman named Emily lived in a small village surrounded by dense forests and undulating hills. The calm of the village, the simplicity of life, and the tranquility of her surroundings had always been her favorites. Even though Emily enjoyed her job as a teacher at the neighborhood elementary school, she had a restless feeling inside. She frequently found herself dreaming of something else, something she did not understand, but she could not identify what it was.
She lived a routine life. Get up, go to class, come home, make supper, read, and go to bed. It felt like a life on autopilot, even though it was calm. Although there was nothing obviously wrong, she could not get rid of the feeling that she was intended to accomplish something more, something with a bigger purpose, even if it had been this way for years.
Emily passed the town's ancient clock tower, which had stood for as long as she could remember, one late afternoon on her way home from school. With its towering visage that gazed down on the entire town and its enormous Roman numbers, it was a grand old object. As usual, the bell rung on the hour, but today, for some reason, it felt different. Emily paused and looked up at the tower, noticing an elderly woman seated on a bench below it. She had a pleasant, worn face, silver hair, and a bent figure. Emily paused at the intensity with which she was observing the clock.
Emily was curious and went over to her. "Pardon me," she began courteously, "do you visit here frequently?"
The woman's eyes sparkled as she gave a pleasant smile. "Daily," she answered. "I come to hear the timepiece. It serves as a reminder that time passes whether we like it or not, and it has been ticking for as long as I have been alive.
Emily connected with the woman in a strange way, as though their encounter had profound meaning. She took a seat next to her on the bench, and for a time they both silently observed the clock.
The woman said softly, "It seems like you are thinking about a lot of things."
Emily let out a sigh. “I do. I have been experiencing restlessness, as if I should be doing something more, but I am unable to identify it.
With her eyes firmly on the clock tower, the woman nodded. It is funny how time gives us the impression that we are constantly pursuing something. We move quickly through life, constantly considering the next task or event. However, there are instances when just pausing to listen is the key.
Intrigued, Emily turned to face her. “Listen?”
The woman said, "Pay attention to what time is telling you." It is not always necessary to move quickly. Sometimes it is about taking stock of your past, recognizing where you have been, and appreciating what is ahead. You might find the answers you are looking for if you do that.
Emily gave the woman's words a lot of thinking. She had lost sight of the good things in her life because she had been so preoccupied with what she lacked or had not yet accomplished.
The woman slowly got to her feet, her back slightly straighter than before, as the sun started to set, illuminating the sky with pink and orange tones. She smiled and replied, "Time does not wait for anyone." "But you will realize that you are right where you should be if you take the time to appreciate it."
Emily felt a wave of clarity wash over her as she watched the woman go. She came to the realization that she had not really appreciated the now because she had been so focused on the future. Her work as a teacher was a gift; she impacted children's lives by assisting them in learning and developing and influencing their destinies. Maybe that was what she would been looking for all along.
The following day, Emily decided. She would no longer hasten life. Whether it was her kids' laughing in the classroom or the peaceful mornings she spent reading in her comfortable living room, she would cherish the moments. She would be there for everyone around her as well as for herself.
Emily's sense of fulfillment increased over time. She began tutoring kids who needed more help for free at the neighborhood community center. Realizing that these relationships were the actual jewels of life, she made time for her family and reconnected friendships she had ignored. She no longer felt restless, even though she still had her quiet times of introspection. She now realized that living fully in the moment and enjoying the small things was what brought her contentment rather than reaching some lofty, far-off objective.
As the years went by, Emily gained not only a reputation for her teaching but also for her kindness and profound appreciation of the small pleasures in life. By enjoying the gifts of time, connection, and present, rather than pursuing some far-off ambition, she had discovered her purpose.
When the bell sounded one day, she was seated on the same bench under the clock tower, staring up at its face. Knowing that often the most meaningful moments come from what we already have rather than what we strive for, she smiled quietly to herself, content with the life she had created.
And Emily came to the realization that the restlessness had long since subsided as the sun sank on another day. She had always been there, and now she had discovered her mission. She had been given the solution by time.
