The Struggle of Humanity: Truths We Should Never Forget
Explore the struggle of humanity via ten meaningful lessons learned from the errors of history. It is important to remember these truths which will help create a more just and peaceful future.
Introduction:
Human history has many incredible accomplishments-in science, culture, and in the form of kindness that helped carve our world.
But equally important to that beauty of accomplishments is the struggle of humanity-the wars, the genocides, the slavery, and the injustices that indicate we are capable of barbarity and destruction.
While it may not be easy to confront these truths, we must not forget them. Selecting to forget history may lead to our eventual repetition of it. Through our study of the darkest history we obtain valuable lessons to awaken our compassion toward mankind, defend equality, and implement world peace.
In this post we will revisit 10 lessons about the human experience that we should never forget. These narratives inform us about the results of power, greed and hate in place of empathy and justice.
1. The Holocaust: The Cost of Hatred and Silence
The Holocaust, one of the most horrific events in history, resulted in the death of over six million Jews along with millions of others who were targeted by the Nazi regime. The Holocaust is not just a story of systematic extermination, it is also a story of silence, of ordinary people who turned their heads as this began to unfold.
Lesson: Unfettered hatred can have deadly consequences. Prejudice, once normalized, can manifest into the most unthinkable barbarism. Do not remain silent; we must speak and act against racism, anti-Semitism or any form of discrimination, regardless of how small we may believe it is.
2. Slavery: The Dehumanization of Millions
For decades, slavery was a reality worldwide, separating families and reducing human beings to property. From the transatlantic slave trade to forced labor systems of various types, slavery shows how greed and dehumanization can strip people of dignity.
Lesson: All humans have the right to boldly claim their freedom and equality. Slavery's nightmarish history reminds us to be constantly vigilant about modern forms of exploitation such as human trafficking and forced labor.
3. Global Conflicts: The Biological Reality of Nationalism and Power Competition
The two World Wars of the twentieth century exterminated tens of millions of people and destroyed the world in the process. Filled with nationalism, imperialism, and political tension, the wars taught us that arrogance and power could very quickly shift from a tribal nonsense delusion in one place, to a world disaster.
Lesson: National pride cannot be greater than human life.Diplomacy and international cooperation and dialogue are keys to avoidin
g world wars.
4. Genocide was not Just Jews: Armenia, Rwanda, and Others
Sadly, the Holocaust was not the only genocide. Genocides have occurred since the Armenian Genocide in 1915 through the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, resulting in millions of murders based upon one’s ethnicity, religion, or political convictions.
Lesson: Genocide is not just history, it can happen again. That is why the world must pay close attention to hate speech, propaganda, and divisions that create a religious or ethnic rivalry.
5. Colonialism: Destruction as Civilization
Colonial empires used to rule about all corners of the world, typically justified through the narrative of “civilizing missions.” In reality, colonialism led to exploitation, destruction of culture and oppression of indigenous peoples.
Many of the very inequalities we face around the world today have origins rooted in these colonial practices.
Lesson: Power must never trump justice. Honoring all cultures and respecting sovereign rights is...
6. The Nuclear Bombings: Human Innovation with No Ethical Responsibility are Dangerous.
When the atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, the immediate and long-term consequences devastated countless civilian lives, and many more to come, due to the technology of mass destruction humanity had created.
Lesson learned: No ethical responsibility around scientific advancements can be dangerous. Therefore, we must ensure our innovations serve humanity, not destroy it.
7. The Great Depression: When Greed Breaks Societies.
During the economic collapse of the 1930s, millions were thrown into poverty, unemployment, or despair. Had the financial industry had better management or accountability, the systemic collapse still showed how fragile economic systems are as capitalism and finance relies on unchecked greed and speculation.
Lesson learned: Economic fairness and responsibility matters. Allowing greed to charge more than opportunity leads to suffering for the most vulnerable and damaged to those equal seeking opportunity.
8. Apartheid and Segregation: Institutionalized Racism.
Apartheid in South Africa and laws in the United States that enforced segregation, are examples of history dealing a grievous blow to entire generations of innocent populations that lost their civic rights, education, opportunities and education for something as innocuous as their skin color, and forced treatment from government.
Lesson learned: Racism and anti-semitism are not only personal, they can be systemic. In order to have justice for the injured, that injustice must first address what was not equal, such as access to education or legal rights, it must bring equality.
9.Environmental Destruction: Humanity versus Nature
Deforestation, overfishing, and pollution have always been issues. Whether it was the Dust Bowl from the 1930s or climate change today, human commodification of the environment always has consequences.
Lesson: Nature is not infinite. The downside of the human capacity for progress is that it can cause substantial harm to the environment we depend on. In that sense, preserving the health of our planet is preserving our own health.
10. Terrorism and Extremism: The Manipulation of Belief
Terrorism has taken innocent lives and provoked a culture of hatred since the horror of 9/11. And there have been too many reports and stories of indiscriminate murders or attacks since then in almost all corners of the world.
It almost becomes easier to recall just the ones closer to home because they, too, have become so complicated and messy.
More importantly, they are often built on bastions of twisted ideological beliefs or political ends. The more interesting aspect of rooting out the extremists, is understanding the power of belief and its dangerous manipulation.
Lesson: Belief should unite, not divide. The only way to break cycles of violence is to promote education, dialogue, and acceptance.
Why We Must Lexicon the Dark Side of Humanity
It is easy to only look at the humanities successes— art, science, progress. But forgetting out history is only internalizing the darkness it took to accomplish those successes. Remembering our errors in history:
Allows us to repeat the atrocities of the past.
Offers us compassion and social justice.
Reminds us of the importance of human rights.
Encourages us to create systems based on altruism instead of greed or hate.
History is not just a timeline of "happenings" - it is a
Conclusion
The dark side of humanity demonstrates how fragile morality can be when colored by hate, greed, or ambition. But it also delivers hope: each lesson shows us how to choose compassion over cruelty, peace over war, and unity over division.
We cannot forget the Holocaust, slavery, genocide, and other atrocities. But, more importantly, we must learn from these circumstances. This will enable us to create a more just and peaceful world where the dignity of humanity is valued above all else.
The next chapter of humanity's story is ours to write, and it is our responsibility to assure that it is a brighter chapter than the last.
