The story of a cracked egg and a lifelong friendship
Seraphina's life and values
A Serendipitous Encounter
I first met Seraphina almost three years ago, and our introduction was unforgettable — she accidentally dropped an egg on my shoe. Her shyness was tempered by a remarkable self-assurance that I envied, given my own struggles with confidence. Despite the mishap, her genuine humour shone through, leaving a lasting impression.
The next day, she returned, her curiosity piqued by the flowers and cacti in the shop. When she asked if the cacti were from England, I hesitated, unsure if she was joking or truly believed cacti could thrive in a country that’s mostly rain. Her laughter at the absurdity of the question was contagious, and I couldn’t help but join in. I quipped that she probably needed a coffee to clear her head — a line I often used to upsell, but with her, it felt like genuine banter.
A vivid look into Seraphina’s past
As time went on, Seraphina became a regular visitor. Her presence was a welcome distraction on those dreary mornings when I was counting down the minutes until my shift ended. Her visits provided a much-needed respite from the monotony.
Gradually, I learned more about Seraphina. She shared fragments of her past: a challenging relationship with her father and a deep bond with her brother. Her stories painted a vivid picture of the small village outside Rome where she grew up — lush fields, the constant hum of grasshoppers on hot summer days, and the scent of blooming flowers. Her memories revealed a contemplative girl, yearning for a life beyond the confines of her village and its narrow-minded inhabitants. She worked tirelessly to escape the limitations imposed by her environment, driven by a desire for something greater.
Seraphina’s family was a mix of complexity and warmth. Her father, though often stern and resistant to change, had his moments of unspoken pride in her achievements. Her mother, a quiet but steadfast supporter, nurtured Seraphina’s dreams even when the world seemed indifferent. Her brother, a crucial confidant, had always understood her drive. Despite the separation her departure caused, their bond remained strong, and he would soon join her in this new venture.
As Seraphina’s visits became more frequent, my curiosity about her family grew. I wondered how challenging it must be for parents to watch their children pursue lives far from the paths they envisioned. This reflection made me think about my own parents — how did they feel when I left my hometown? Were they relieved that I was following my dreams, or did they experience a pang of sadness as I became more distant?
I believe they were proud, though they never asked me to abandon my ambitions for their sake. If there’s one thing I can say about them, it’s that they are selfless and supportive. Their happiness seems to be tied to mine — or at least, that’s the impression they’ve always given me.
As I reminisced about my encounters with Seraphina, I realised how these seemingly ordinary moments had deepened my understanding of connection and belonging. Despite our different paths, we found common ground in our shared experiences of leaving the familiar in search of something more meaningful. Her stories not only drew me into her world but also prompted me to reflect on my own journey and the sacrifices made by those we leave behind. Our paths crossed in that little shop, each of us seeking solace and understanding from the other. In Seraphina, I saw a reflection of my own hopes, and fears, and the courage it takes to forge a new path. The beauty of human connection lies in the realization that, despite our differences, we are all navigating the same quest for meaning and fulfilment.
Out of the blue: A new beginning
Then, one sunny summer day, she returned after what felt like an eternity. It had been at least six months since I last saw her. As she approached, her face was alight with a radiant smile, and I could sense an unmistakable glow about her. It was clear she had exciting news to share. Trying to focus on the customer in front of me, I could barely contain my excitement.
“Hey there! Long time no see,” I greeted her, my smile wide.
“I know! It’s been a while!” she responded, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “I’ve been working on a new project — I’m opening a small nursery for children back home.”
“Whaat?” I exclaimed, my curiosity piqued. How had her life taken such an unexpected turn?
“Tell me more,” I said, leaning in with eagerness, ready to hear about this new chapter in her life.
“Well, it’s still in the early stages,” Seraphina explained. “I have the place, but dealing with regulations, permits, and bureaucracy has been quite a challenge. It will be a reality soon, probably within a year or a year and a half.”
She took a deep breath, her excitement palpable. “It all started when I reconnected with the Montessori approach to education. The more I learned, the more I felt aligned with its philosophy — encouraging children to learn at their own pace, fostering independence, and nurturing their natural curiosity. It just made so much sense to me.”
Her eyes reflected the moment it all clicked. “I realised I wanted to create something meaningful, something with a lasting impact. So, I decided to leave the city behind. I needed a change, something more peaceful, closer to nature, and, most importantly, closer to home. My parents are getting older, and I felt a strong pull to be with them, to provide the care they deserve. Plus, my brother will be part of this project too. I’m thrilled to collaborate with him after such a long time.”
Her voice softened. “I found a quiet village not far from where I grew up, away from the pollution and noise. It’s a serene place, perfect for children to grow and learn in harmony with nature. Opening the nursery there feels like the right path, both for the children and for me. It’s a new adventure deeply connected to my roots, my family, and my desire to create something beautiful and enduring.”
As she spoke, I could sense the peace and fulfilment her decision had brought her. It wasn’t just about teaching; it was about crafting a life aligned with her values, embracing simplicity, family, and the joy of nurturing the next generation.
