The Money Paradox:

How Wealth Influences Our Behavior and Happiness

By Boboie LimenPublished 2 years ago 4 min read

Rico was a successful businessman who had everything he ever wanted. He owned a large mansion, a fleet of luxury cars, a private jet, and a yacht. He had a beautiful wife, two lovely children, and a loyal dog. He traveled the world, ate at the finest restaurants, and wore the most expensive clothes. He was admired by his peers, respected by his employees, and envied by his rivals. He was happy, or so he thought.

One day, he received a phone call from his doctor, who told him that he had a rare and incurable disease. He only had six months to live. Rico was shocked and devastated. He couldn't believe that his life was going to end so soon. He had worked so hard to achieve his dreams, and now he had to leave everything behind. He felt angry, scared, and hopeless.

He decided to spend his remaining time with his family and friends. He wanted to make the most of his last days and create some happy memories. He took his wife and children to exotic places, bought them lavish gifts, and threw extravagant parties. He invited his friends and relatives to join him in his celebrations. He donated some of his money to charities and causes that he cared about. He tried to be generous, kind, and grateful.

But he soon realized that money couldn't buy him happiness. His wife was distant and cold, his children were spoiled and rebellious, and his dog was old and sick. His friends and relatives were only interested in his wealth and status, and his employees and rivals were waiting for him to die. He felt lonely, betrayed, and empty.

He decided to seek some spiritual guidance. He visited different temples, churches, and mosques. He read various scriptures, books, and articles. He listened to different gurus, priests, and imams. He tried to find some meaning, purpose, and peace in his life. He wanted to understand the real value of money to humans.

But he soon realized that money couldn't buy him salvation. His faith was shallow and weak, his knowledge was superficial and vague, and his actions were selfish and hypocritical. He felt confused, lost, and guilty.

He decided to end his life. He wrote a suicide note, took a lethal dose of pills, and lay down on his bed. He closed his eyes and waited for death to take him away. He hoped that his pain and suffering would end soon.

But he soon realized that money couldn't buy him freedom. His conscience was heavy and dark, his regrets were many and deep, and his fears were strong and real. He felt sorry, ashamed, and terrified.

He opened his eyes and saw a bright light. He heard a gentle voice that said, "Welcome, Rico. I have been waiting for you."

He looked around and saw a beautiful garden. He smelled the fragrance of flowers, heard the melody of birds, and felt the warmth of the sun. He saw a man who smiled at him and said, "I am your guardian angel. I have been watching over you since you were born. I have seen your joys and sorrows, your successes and failures, your virtues and sins. I have loved you unconditionally and prayed for you constantly. I have come to take you to your final destination."

Rico was amazed and curious. He asked, "Where are we going?"

The angel said, "We are going to meet your Creator, who will judge you according to your deeds and intentions. He will decide whether you will enter heaven or hell, where you will spend your eternity."

Rico was nervous and anxious. He asked, "What will He say to me?"

The angel said, "He will say what He always says to every human being: 'O son of Adam, I created you from dust, and to dust you shall return. I gave you life, and I took it away. I gave you free will, and I tested you with trials and blessings. I gave you money, and I asked you how you used it. Did you use it to help or harm, to love or hate, to serve or oppress, to worship or disobey? Did you use it to seek the truth or follow the falsehood, to seek the good or follow the evil, to seek the eternal or follow the temporal? Did you use it to seek Me or forget Me?'"

Rico was speechless and stunned. He realized that he had wasted his life and money on things that didn't matter. He realized that he had ignored his Creator and His commands. He realized that he had failed his test and betrayed his trust. He realized that he had no excuse and no hope.

He bowed his head and said, "I am sorry, Lord. I have sinned against You and myself. I have done wrong and I deserve punishment. I have nothing to offer You but my repentance and my plea for mercy. Please forgive me, Lord. Please have mercy on me, Lord. Please save me, Lord."

The angel said, "Amen."

The end.
