How to build a paper boat
"There's no way in Hell" The Old Salt had spoken. He'd seen all types of ships in his time and he was adamant that what we set out to do was impossible. "There's no way you can make a seaworthy boat out of paper". He should know. After all, he was a seasoned shipwright who'd lost digits on boatyards from Borneo to Bangor and mastered the craft of boat-building over a lifetime. Who were we? A bunch of amateurs. An arts collective by the Name of Mare Liberum. A motley crew of seven artists, poets, and designers who had gathered at the Antique Boat Museum, in Northern New York State, right on the edge of the Saint Lawrence. We were far from Brooklyn, and it showed.

Pest or mythical being?
There is nothing like flora and fauna to give you a sense of place. I grew up in a tropical region where the animals that surrounded me regularly were lizards, macaws, monkeys, snakes, in addition to your domestic cats, dogs, chickens. That meant that North American critters were exotic to me and experienced through cartoons. If it were available, I would have paid an admission fee to see squirrels, racoons, skunks, and possums-a thought that would be ludicrous to your average American gardener and/or hater of pests. Today I pay hundreds of dollars to have racoons, skunks and possums removed from my backyard.

Different View of Small Town Living
Living in a small town has its perks, and also has its drags... I've lived in the same small town for 30 years. Well, my whole life. I've seen so many people come and go. Businesses start with hopes of bringing something to the community, followed by discouragement with having to close the doors due to, just not having the business. WalMart has tried bringing a store here, but it creates too much competition and smaller stores will just close down. Or so the town says. But honestly, we wouldn't know. I've watched this little town just die down, with no hopes of having something to come in and replace it. Things that make it hard to get resources and essentials that are needed. Even going to the doctor's office is a big deal. You better be prepared for an all day trip. And that's not just waiting in the waiting area, or now a days, your car, for the doctor to call you back. Most people travel at least 90 miles to get what's needed. But then again, if someone is going out of town, we can just let that person know we need something and hopefully they wont be too busy to do you the favor of bringing toilet paper from Walmart because our dollar stores are out, or whatever.

John's Butcher Shop, selling friendship
When I first came to Ireland, a friend told me that the town's butcher's store was a "psychotherapy center" for the entire town. No matter what the trouble, into the butcher store must come out with a smile. I did not understand before, but later became a regular customer of the butcher store, only to find out the reason.

Rat Island
White crosses sunk into the iron-gray earth. A frostbitten wind skipped along gunmetal waves, carrying with it sprays of salt and the stench of turpentine. It shook the sign staked into the mud: Little Falls Cemetery. Though, it was less a cemetery and more of a lawn. White picket fences be damned.

The Language of Music
Cari was a dancer. She had always loved to dance, loved to move to any beat or rhythm that played. She belonged to a traveling troop of performers who went from town to town on their way to the bigger palace cities. They had begun to travel along the coast of the country of Edraria. Having passed its borders, the night before. Cari had never been into Edraria before. It was a small country, more of a peninsula jutting off one corner of the continent. Nearly every town they would pass through would be a coastal town. Only the capital and palace resided inland. Cari had heard from the others that it was an attempt to keep the palace safe should the late summer storms get bad enough. There had been stories of large waves of water coming many miles inland and destroying everything in their path, but the capital was situated far enough inland that the waves would not reach it. Having only ever heard stories, Cari had a hard time imagining such a thing would be possible. But then they entered Edraria and she saw the ocean for the first time. As she had stared out over the vast open sea, she suddenly could start to believe that those horrible storms might be possible. While the air was warm and pleasant, the wide-open ocean looked so cold and Cari – as excited as she was to see the ocean – felt a mild sense of unease about it too.

Swan Song
“Betty?...Betty?” The words of the man’s gently, questioning voice echoed softly, not only, in the old woman’s ears but, easily throughout her mind. The moment felt distinctly familiar to her, but it wasn't here it was somewhere else and had happened…somewhere else? Try as she might she couldn't put her finger on it. Where was it she was thinking of again…? Was it a few weeks... or a few years ago? She couldn’t ‘quite’ remember. How frustrating to find the specific chronology temporarily eluding her, skirting along the tip of her tongue, in addition to around the corridors of her memory, much like Theseus, using his ball of yarn, slowly negotiating his way around the Minotaur's labyrinth. All she had to do, to remember, she reminded herself was to untangle the wool. This was in complete contrast as to how she actually felt though, which was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, as fresh and as clear to her now, as it was, whenever that was, that she’d felt these things before.
