Torn Between Two
It was the middle of the football season and the Flywood Seagulls were four to one. The score was 29-28 and the Seagulls were losing to the Retrievers in the fourth quarter. So far the game had been very engaging for everyone watching, so much so that people were literally on the edge of their seats and biting their nails. The Retrievers had the ball and it was third down and four yards to go with 26 seconds left in the game. The ball was snapped and the next couple of moments went in slow motion. The Seagulls’ quarterback intercepted the ball and ran 68 yards down the field to score a touchdown. The crowd went wild, salty popcorn was thrown in the air and landed in people’s hair, the high school student section began their cheers with the risers shaking with every stomp, and the school band started playing their victory song. The game was over and everyone was ecstatic. Juniper was winding herself through the maze of high school students taking their victory pictures. She was searching for her ride and when suddenly she was knocked over by a very tall guy in a Seagulls jersey. “Hey! Watch it!” She said as she struggled to collect herself to stand up.

Embers (Ch. 7)
GISELLE I was bored. So much so, that I wasn't even enjoying the oral transaction Miguel Duran, the head of Uncle Freddy's farm help, was giving me at the moment. He was older, in his early 30s, and more experienced than the guys and girls I usually slept with. Unfortunately, not even his skillful tongue made me feel the buzz I was looking for. I wasn't a total asshole, so I decided not to fake it this time, and pulled him out from between my legs. He sighed in defeat and stomped his way towards the small bathroom Uncle Freddy had built for me up here in the loft a couple of years back.

Winter Is Coming
The last of the golden leaves had fallen. The sun cruelly shone golden, piercing Mari’s eyes with no warmth to penetrate her fleece layers as she hiked up to her cottage on the hill. Blinded she shielded her eyes with her worn fleece sleeve as she turned the key in the lock. The air within her home burned her face with a chilly sting so she hurriedly slammed the door and pulled matches from her pocket. She always enjoyed the making of her fire and it was not long before the room became warm. Having once been a farmer’s croft, Mari’s home was small and snug with low ceilings and thick sturdy walls. “Bijoux” her sister would have sarcastically said, and likened it to a hovel but for Mari it was haven. She enjoyed solitude.

Christmas Homecoming (Pt. 2)
Descending the steps, I stepped right in front of Bryson. I was so close to him, I could feel his breath on my face. My insides were eating me up as I spoke. “Bryson, why should I give you the time of day? What could you possibly have to say to me?”

Embers (Ch. 6)
ZANDER "What the hell would you two do without me?" Thea's question was the first thing to greet us the moment she stepped inside. Her scrunched up angry face followed next as she handed me Zach's pills and went into the kitchen to fetch for some water. He'd been out for about an hour now. He'd wake up soon, which meant Thea had no time to snitch on me. Not yet anyway. Giselle had come up with an excuse for Thea to come join us at the bonfire, and Uncle Freddy suddenly had no problem with letting her, giving her the liberty of passing by him without letting him know what was really going on with Zach.

Christmas Homecoming
The snow blanketed the pastures alongside the highway as I drove home. It looked white and pure. The next thought that ran through my mind was, but all things white get dirty. This is my first time going home in two years. I left right after my divorce was final.

I Love You—Love, Me
Dana was sitting in her Biology class. Life at Jefferson High was not horrible, but then again, it is high school. She wasn't the most popular junior girl, but she wasn't a loser either, an in-betweener you could say. She was average height with long dark brown hair and gray-blue eyes, and she was always rather fit due to her passion for ballet.

Embers (Ch. 5)
ZACH I spent most of my childhood with my eyes closed. Now that I could finally keep them open on my own, I wanted to see what else the world had to offer. That included taking in some vitamin D underneath the scorching late summer heat at Sylvan Beach. And, also scouting for potential new people to talk to. Or girls. Preferably, girls. My goal was to find a girlfriend before the fall semester was over. I figured I'd start my search at the beach, where there were cute girls in flattering bikini's and pretty smiles lounging about on the sand and in the ocean.

November Breezes; She Remembers
The sun rises over the parking lot at Wal-Mart; announcing its presence with an array of oranges, reds and yellows. Seagulls flying overhead, in spite of the cold, causing you to wonder if they even know where they are.

Joker in the Pack
John-Paul was famous for his jokes. One-liners, witty ripostes, impersonations, slapstick, anecdotes, observations—John-Paul had mastered them all. His problem was that his ability to behave appropriately in any given social context was hit and miss, so while he caused a merry riot at his best friend’s wedding, his actions at his great-uncle’s wake resulted in several family members refusing to answer his texts for a month.
