Whether written centuries ago or just last year, literary couples show that love is timeless.
Charlie and the Ethereal Plane
A boisterous knocking jolted Charlie from her sleep. Her heart dropped into her stomach as she struggled to orient herself. She squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head. The dimly lit room was still spinning when a loud but muffled voice came from the other side of the door. “Hello! Anyone home? It's UPEX, delivering a package for a Ms. Gary.” Charlie groaned as she pushed her fuzzy blanket aside and rose from her mustard couch. She dragged her feet along the carpeted floor, staggering slowly towards the door and rubbing encrusted sleep from her dry eyes. The delivery person knocked aggressively once more, causing Charlie to jump and shout “I'm comin'! Gimme a minute!”

A Day Lived Again
On this fateful night of darkness, with the moon looming in full view, Jon Baptiste lost touch with this reality. In truth, the hooves of reality kicked him deep into another. Heart pounding, breath quickening, Jon found himself in a strange, unknowable land. His mind was preloaded with a sense of finding something. The sound of crows filled his ears, and a feeling of dread filled his stomach. He wanted to find it, whatever it was, his mind continued to wander, he felt he was in the right place – but what was “it”? The fog made it impossible to make out anything other than the muddy road ahead. It all felt like a bad dream and quite literally was. Fear crept in as the scent of a pungent rose might do on a humid day. Vanquished of any sense of adventure, Jon, frozen in utter horror of it all, did not attempt to voyage any further. The crows grew louder, the fog thickened, Jon was helpless as he catalyzed back into reality, he sat up in bed sweating worse than a triathlon runner.

Nathaniel
Chapter one: The Reason in Unreasonable He struck his shimmering sword into the hot golden sand beneath his feet and fell to one knee. “Nathaniel!” yelled Israfael as he flew over Nathaniel’s fallen silhouette and into the battlefield, but all Nathaniel could hear was the echoes of laughter that once filled his realm.

The Absence of You
It was a rainy day, you know, the ones that make you think of him. Where the cold isn’t a temperature, but a reminder of the absence of what was. Morning ritual: coffee - black, and with enough sugar to call it a dessert. I take my meds on time now, anti-depressants, as I reminisce on the days where I was lucky enough to forfeit my mental health and say to myself “I’ll take it later”. I’m sure I had nightmares, but like usual this morning I didn’t wake up with the clarity of what happened, which is probably a good thing. I carry the dazed and hungover feeling I’m left with instead, and like clockwork, I wonder how I manage to feel like this without an ounce of alcohol the night before.

Brother's Ticket Keeper
The scratch-off ticket was an odd present. Ridley’s brother, Joseph, had stopped exchanging gifts with him when they were teenagers. Ridley felt a little bad that he hadn’t gotten his brother anything, but then again, Ridley was pretty sure the scratch-off was a gag gift.

Espoir
When I woke everyone had left the theater and all the lights were on. “Rise and shine,” Cody said. “Dang I fell asleep again.” “Long day?” “Yea.” I helped him clean the popcorn and candy wrappers and paper cups from between the seats and aisles then he cut out the lights and we stood in the dark lobby of the theater. “See you tomorrow?” “What’s playing?” “The Divine Nymph. Old seventies Italian film. It’s one of my all times.” “Yea I’ll be here. Save my seat.”
