Gone Are The Days
The picture above is the beginning of a major snow storm in Queens, NY. A Nor’easter. Gail or Kim or some other name. I’m an elementary school principal, private school, in the middle of a pandemic. 2020 man... am I right? Anyway, I closed school for tomorrow. Principal of the Year... I can see me accepting my award. The district we’re in wants us to do remote learning! NYC public schools have already said there will no longer be snow days. When schools close for weather they will shift to remote online learning. My quiet response was, what about that means it’s a snow day. Nothing! We have effectively taken away a piece of childhood. I closed and if I get caught I’ll deal with it. In March we were all closed and transitioned to remote learning. It was needed. It wasn’t liked by students, parents or faculty, but it was needed. It stressed us all out. However, we needed something to try to keep to the routine. But tomorrow we need a break, we need to enjoy. As I made the announcement over the p.a. system I heard a smattering of cheers. As I walked the halls and poked my head into classrooms there were thank yous. I made sure to tell them to go outside and be safe but to enjoy the snow too.

Covid-19 Should Unite Us
The new normal should evolve into a positive term. What we are experiencing because of the pandemic is temporary. This should be more apparent now that a vaccine seems to be soon on its way. Also, consider that each of us have our own "normal". So what does it really mean "new normal"? Social distancing and masks will not be our new lives. They are not normal. They are fleeting as far as the bigger picture goes.

Unconditional Love
This morning, as I drove and the sun rose, the song “Good Life” by OneRepublic came on. I used to play this song for my oldest son when he was really little - too young to really understand the words. I’d play it for him and dance around the room, holding his tiny self and telling him he was going to have a “good good life”. Now he’s 10. He is full of exuberance and joy and believes in magic and knows inherently that he is going to have a good good life.

The Wrong Side of the Bread
“The mayonnaise is on the wrong side of the bread,” he growled. “I’m sorry, I will make it again for you.” This was a weekly scenario she was all too familiar with. She would escape to the shower when she could, and contemplate her reasons for living. She felt stuck, trapped, and scared. How could she make it with out him? Where would she go? She didn’t want to be another single mother struggling to make it. She just recently had their daughter, so now that made 4 mouths to feed. Oh no! It’s 9:00pm, he will be here any minute and the kids are still up and there’s toys on the floor! “Y’all please help mommy pick up, we have to hurry before daddy gets here,” she said. Then she would strap her daughter to her chest and plead with her 3 little boys to hurry to get in the bed. His car pulls into the drive way, and She hears his supposed “spiritual music” blasting. He unlocks the door. She listen to his heavy foot steps walk all over the house. As he gets closer to their room, she realizes shes holding her breath. She lays still, while holding their daughter and she closes her eyes. He says nothing. They made it another night.

Lumber in the Sun
Right now I work part time for a construction company, and we do remodeling both residential and commercial; every now and then (or super frequently and I just haven't noticed yet; I haven't been here that long) we build a bathroom in a flip house for a real estate agent. My first day on the job went something like this: I showed up outside the work truck on a backstreet in my hometown and drove off with a couple guys around my age who I met for the first time that day at 7:30 in the morning.

Champagne Problems
The winter air was cold, and I could still feel it stinging my skin through my coat as I bumped along the train tracks. The midnight sky flashing by looked blurry through my tears and the warped windows. I could feel my body ache, from head to toe, drowning in guilt. I leaned my head against the frosting window, trying to decide which was worse: to stay there in that house, with my almost-family sleeping peacefully with only thin walls between us, or to be out here among the hustle and bustle of a gloomy Christmas Eve midnight, amid people who also, feel as though they have nowhere to go.
