humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
Playing with Dead Rats
During lunch break, a group of teachers, all women, had gathered in the lounge to savor cups of hot coffee, check out catalog bargains, and talk about home and school. In one of the conversations, a second-grade teacher shared that several little girls in her class regularly brought Barbie and Ken dolls to school. She remarked that their play episodes mirrored the drama of TV soap operas, and her comments sparked a lively conversation about the loss of innocence, about premature sophistication, and about the powerful influence of television.

Shaking Up My Luck
It was the middle of the night, when a sudden jolt suddenly woke me up. The room was shaking, glass from my windows had shattered everywhere, things were falling down all around me. Not another earthquake!! I had endured a lot in my life, but the constant earthquake after eartquake was getting to me. All that "excitement" that seemed like an eternity, actually only lasted 5 minutes. There was substantial damage done to the building that I was living in at the time, and instead of waiting for the necessary repairs to be done this time, I made the decision to find another place as soon as I was able to. I gathered up all the belongings that I was able to salvage, and found a cheap hotel to stay in temporarily. While looking for a more permanent place, I decided to help clean up the debris in the meantime.

X Marks the Spot
Sun filtered through the blinds into Kayla’s face making her throw her arm over her eyes, just as her alarm clock went off. “Damn it,” she groaned, “where did the time go?” Dragging herself out of bed, grumbling the whole time, she staggered over to the bathroom to get ready for work.

COVID-19 China
03. FEBRUARY. 2020… YIBIN… SICHUAN… CHINA I am now 63 years young and I sit here in quarantine due to China’s outbreak of Coronavirus. With over 360 dead in China, 1 in The Philippines, and 21,000 infected worldwide it is an epidemic, yet with no cure and no idea of how long China will be virtually closed to the outside world… There are, I believe, over 260 cured at present, but there is always a question mark on these figures one way or the other… Either way China is scared…

The Little Black Book
It was a normal start to a normal day for a normal working week. I followed my comforting ritual - breakfast, brush teeth, comb hair, hop in car and drive to the station. Each day I got the morning paper to read on the train, took a window seat and saw the usual faces. The young hair dresser doing her nails, the middle aged executive on his laptop, the old gentleman reading a little black book. I opened the paper and waited for my stop.

Blood. The tap water turned pink. So much for using a knife on that order of estate coins from eBay. It didn’t help that the cat jumped up on the table when I was trying to cut the tape, either. The person who packaged it was a madman, using all that tape on it. The entire box was wrapped in it. Of course, spending $49.95 on a couple Kennedy half-dollars was pretty mad, too. I did not throw that kind of money around. I already regretted the purchase, but I heard silver was going up, so I thought it might be a good investment. Holy cow, that tap water stung. Anyway, two band-aids later and I was back at it, looking for something else to cut the tape with.

Jacob's Luck
For Jacob, most of his days are for lack of a better word, blah. He wakes up every morning at 6:30 am, takes a shower and brushes his teeth. After that, he takes his sweet time as he gets dressed, dragging his feet and barely able to get on his shoes in time to make it out of the door by 8:15 am. Then, on his way to work, he’d stop by the gas station ad pick up a cup of coffee. This was his routine almost every single morning. Not today though. Today would be the day Jacob’s luck would change.
