humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
Dear Aaliyah
Dear Aaliyah, If you are reading this, I’m dead. I’ll admit, that sounded better in my head. Sort of pithy, and maybe a bit funny for an opening line. I was going for something that would make you giggle, but I’m realizing now just how ominous it looks on paper, given the circumstances.

They Seek Him Here
If you are into epic vigilante sagas such as Marvel’s DareDevil or Jessica Jones, but also love regency love pieces such as Pride and Prejudice, and wish that there was some sort of mashup between the two genres, I would like to introduce you to The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Spyish
Time. What an interesting concept. It is strange laying here and thinking about the time. I am watching the clock tick by. It’s hot here. Of all the countries I’ve traveled to, this one is the hottest. I feel like I’m in some Cartel movie scene. The creaking ceiling fan, brown curtains, and loud city outside. Of course, Mexico city is better than Oklahoma City by a long shot. It’s time to go.

The Poet on 23rd
“What up Ese? What’s hanging” Jorge and Jose clasp hands in a handshake that takes at least 73 seconds. I only know this because I have timed it. I have seen it done so many times that I started timing it every time I see them together. They average around 73 seconds every time, if they are in a big hurry they get it down to 65 but never lower. If they are feeling happy or maybe even high, it takes about 85 seconds and I can write a whole stanza in that time.

The Little Black Book I Found At The Bus Stop
I always stop to pick up a bit of paper flapping in the wind. I’ll read the receipt at the top of a trash can, or the scraps of old poster on the billboard when they haven’t been quite removed or covered by the new. You never know what might be on it. You never know what somebody has just lost.

The Game
By the time they got to the cabin, the exhaustion was clear on everyone’s faces. The truth was that this was a wild goose chase and Carmichael knew it. Ana was much too clever to get caught especially now that she was in the possession of the notebook…. even injured the likelihood of them catching up to her was low.

A New Day for Improv
Howard often daydreamed about becoming an actor, especially during work hours but his job as a file clerk demanded otherwise. The thought of pursuing his acting dream was downright terrifying, and would often be countered with made-up scenarios of ridicule and degradation from his peers, who laughed at him unendingly. You want to be a what? An actor? You're a riot Howard, they often replied dismissively. It was best to keep it a secret, he thought.

Plans
It didn’t snow much anymore, since the weather had changed. M. liked walking, keeping her eyes on the ground, seeing the earth that humans had covered up in so many places, seeing the traces of activity in the landscape. A glove on a low wall, flattened, yet pointing forward. Three individual fruit pies, in boxes, left on the edge of a parking lot. M. stopped and tied a fallen purple scarf to a parking meter, so that it might better flag down its owner. Some people lived outside; a scarf could be an important thing

Leather-bound Mystery
It all starts on a blank page in my little black notebook. Spilling my soul on each page, en route to work everyday. I always find it serendipitous to unclog my mind on paper, while the seats on the subway clog up. Consciously creating space in my head, while the space around me fills beyond my control. There’s so many interesting strangers one encounters everyday on the train. Some more familiar than others, yet some absolutely strange. Strange it all became when this man stepped on the train that autumn day.

The Plan
“I know it’s in here somewhere,” Mina said as she slammed the kitchen drawers closed. She opened the pantry door, a place she knew to be futile searching grounds, and moved every container and box. Nothing. She returned to the kitchen and began opening drawers like a crazy woman once more.
