humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
Heart of the Siren
We enter upon the year 2064 in what used to be the United States of America. The world has become war barren and the people are now fighting amongst themselves more than even before. Much like the Red Scare when communism had reach this once great country of freedom, now it is nothing more than the shadow of its former self. There no longer the Constitutional Rights, the Bill of Rights nor Birthright Citizenship. People trusted nobody around them thought that they were out for each other’s throat, trying to cheat them out of money or various other forms of greed or heretics guilty of treason plotting to destroy society. Censorship was the worst it has ever been to the point where the news was simply outrageous lies made to make companies money and people had no clue as to what has happening in other countries besides their plot to tear the American people apart and divide the lands amongst themselves.

The Heart of Time
“What if You could save the world and bring about Harmony to all of its inhabitants? Could you follow your heart and do what is right in the moment? Do You Trust Your Heart enough to follow it? The Heart will Set all Free.” Says my Grandmother as she hands me the most Beautiful Heart Locket I had ever Seen. It was Lined on the outside with lustrous 24k Gold. Its surface was a glistening red, and it had a key hole in the center. “Oh Thank you so much Nana. But where is the key?” I asked anxiously as I waited to open it. If it Looks this Good on the outside, I can only Imagine what is on the inside. “Your Key will come in the moment it needs to come. Then You will know your Heart.”

Butterfly
When I was a child we moved around a lot. I used to joke that whenever my dad wanted to go on vacation we moved instead. As a young girl, the constant upheaval and having to leave all of our things and people constantly really took a toll on me. It would be difficult for me to sleep in any of the new places we lived. My mom's sister would sing to me to get me to sleep and the song was about a butterfly that would constantly roam. Often times for the first couple of weeks after we moved, my mom would have to call my aunt to sing to me over the phone so that I could have that feeling of home.

Company Policy
"Miss Turin? Mr. Birch would like to see you in Hr. Please report promptly, and with a smile!" I shot up in bed. The woman's voice was lilting and chipper, but it may as well have been the shriek of a banshee. Crap. Did I oversleep? I can't afford a third tardy penalty in the same quarter.

The Fourth Panel
Unsure of the next step, he reached into his back pocket pulling out the black leather bound journal that had become his most prized possession. He felt the smooth warm pages and was delighted to find that he knew what to do all along. He liked the reassurance of consulting the book. He smiled remembering the first time he laid eyes on the contents of the journal.

Apocalyptic Dipsomaniac
Of all the times in history to be a heavy drinker, I end up in the one with the most broken and dried out bottles. You might think it near impossible to get access to enough booze to even get a buzz, much less a habit. But, unlike some of the other poor saps in The Beginning that found the cliched holdouts like grocery stores and water towers, I stumbled upon a liquor store. Not just any liquor store, the liquor store. It was the Macy’s of fine wines and spirits, a whole small warehouse of booze, mixers, and all on one of the few still active power grids. It was all mine! Now, don’t get me wrong, I know that to most folks, maybe a head of lettuce or a loaf of bread would be preferred to a bottle of scotch and some potato chips. However, before everything went sideways, I was…well, a bit of a deadbeat. Mind you, I never claimed to be a good husband or even a good person, but my family hoped that I could be both of those one day. It was a good thought.

The Magic Faraway Tree
My mum wouldn't let me wear the pots and pans to school. I remember us standing in the kitchen and her telling me “They’re too heavy!” and “you won’t be able to sit down without making a racket”. My dad suggested from the lounge that she just let me, it would make for a good laugh and a photo, even if I couldn't keep my costume on for the whole day.

What We See
I didn’t think the instability would come this far north. The rebellion seemed isolated to Washington and Wall Street. Many believed the American military would quickly get things under control. Those responsible for disrupting the American way of life would then be put in jail and life would go on. Nobody predicted the extent to which the armed men and women had been radicalized. Ideologues had infiltrated the military and police. Silently, without anyone outside being aware, individuals joined tribes which included neo-liberal corporatists who wanted to maintain the status quo, environmental activists frustrated at the world's slow response to the climate crises, and the usual extreme groups inspired by religious fanaticism. And moving among all these groups were instigators from foreign goverments who wanted to see America crumble. And so on March 2024 America stopped working and started fighting.
