As a member of Gen X, I was one of the members of the generation that was forced to grow up too fast. I was taking care of my younger siblings and cousins when I was 8 years old. It was not unusual for me to be left alone with them while the adults went to the store or to work. I was a confident for the adults in my family. It was not uncommon for me to be the "middle-man" trying to help broker peace in a family conflict when I was 10 years old. Nor was it uncommon for me to call the police to report domestic incidents of violence when those attempts at keeping the peace failed miserably.
