You Were Born This Way
“You called her broken since the day she was born, but she was never really broken until you broke her.” – Kendra Jaymes Picture this you were brought into this world. A perfect baby, no damage no trauma. Just an innocent pink cheek human. You would cry as a baby, and toddler as nearly 100% of babies and toddlers do. You would touch counter tops, windows and doors with sticky fingers, climb on counter tops to try reach the good snacks. You would play with your barbies, stuffed animals and imaginary friend. You would fall down riding your bike and scrap your knee, cry. You would read books with a flash light under your blanket or play your Gameboy quietly at night. You would build forts, make magic potions in the backyard. And let’s not forget those Red Georgia clay mud pies. You would play in the woods, come home dirty and covered in mud and wash off with the water hose.

Most children dropped out of school before they reached their teenage years. Their days were spent helping their families in the fields or working odd jobs to earn a few extra coins. Education, for many, was considered a luxury—something only the privileged could afford.

The Promise That Lasted Until the Final Breath
There is a kind of love that doesn’t make noise, that doesn’t show itself in grand ceremonies or fireworks. It’s a quiet love—the strong hand resting on your back, the soft voice you hear in the silence of the night, the presence we often take for granted until one day we realize it was everything. That was the love my father had for my mother, and the love she carried for him in return.

The Map that Carries Me
When I was a young boy, my Mama taught me to move through life with dignity and grace. She prepared meals on a wood burning stove while keeping an eye on her four children, each demanding in their own way. I watched her combine handfuls of flour, water, and whatever vegetables we had, and somehow it became a nourishing meal. She measured care with her hands, her tone, her love, the way she paused before answering each of our questions. I learned from her that survival required creativity, patience, and, above all, a willingness to love fully, even when circumstances tried to make that impossible.
