Woman in the Red Coat
I was standing in the line of the coffee shop, mentally preparing the conversation I would have with the barista. I’m always nervous in social situations. I do not converse easily with others. I knew she’d say good morning, then ask me how I am, followed by what I would want. I had to make sure I said quickly, good morning, fine, and a decaf americano. She would give me a funny look, and then ask me why decaf. I’d laugh and pay quickly so I didn’t have to explain that caffeine is the drug of choice of most people and I can’t buy into that concept. As the person in front of me finished their order, I took a deep breath and walked up to the counter. I waited for the girl to speak but instead, she turned around and had a coffee cup in her hand. She smiled, “your decaf americano sir” and she placed it on the counter when my hand didn’t reach out for it. I stood stunned and started to bumble, “thank--you, um, good morning, or thank you.” I reached into my back pocket but immediately dropped it on the floor. As I scrambled to pick it up she started to giggle. When I popped back upfront of the floor she spoke again, “it’s paid for by that lady over there” she pointed to a woman in a red coat. I gulped, and pulled a five-dollar bill out of my wallet, and put it in the tips jar. I smiled and grabbed the cup, and turned towards the woman in the red coat.

The Little Black Book
Natasha Raymond walked along the boardwalk outside the restaurant she worked at and sighed to herself. The water was so beautiful at sunset, it always stunned her into silence. That evening, however, it simply made her sad. Her mother had always loved the way the water looked during the sunset and she had taught her daughter to love it as well. Natasha looked down at her funeral blacks and sighed again. She wished her mother was at her side, making her laugh with stories about her time as a maid for a rich family.

Oblivious to the events that were about to unfold today, Travis Winkler strolled down the street on his way to catch the bus. He was in a great mood. Which wasn’t unusual, Travis was always in a good mood, but today was special, he just didn't realize how truly special it was about to become. The year is 2020, the entire year the world has been basically on lockdown. There was a new virus that spread faster than anyone was able to contain it, creating a new pandemic. With the world being on lockdown in multiple states, countries, and continents, people were lacking in money. There were many advertisements offering money for simple things. One of the main advertisements being a story written about a little black book.

The snow-flakes flurry slowly around your cardboard box. True winter’s cold wraps around your fingers like a snake crushing its prey. You had lived through a few winters in the alley you called home, the box providing little shelter from your frozen hell. Water trickles from your nose and freezes to your thick black moustache. My Little Black Book
It all started with that little black notebook. I'd received it in the mail on my birthday. No sender was listed and the enclosed note simply read "Happy Birthday!" I flipped through the empty pages and wondered who sent it. The notebook itself was clearly high quality. It had an elastic closure and an attached bookmark with lined pages. Whoever sent it even personalized it with my name at the bottom. I didn't need a notebook though, so I tossed it on a shelf and planned to keep it there.
