LOCKDOWN
LOCKDOWN!! The year was 2020. It was a dark, frosty, solemn night and things were about to go downhill completely! Boris Johnson, the UK prime minister, had just announced the first-ever lockdown due to the deadly Coronavirus pandemic. Talia knew it was going to be the hardest thing that she had to do because she knew she would have to deal with her draining mental health alone. This wasn't exactly hard for her because she didn't have any GOOD friends. Well, except for one. He was all Talia ever needed; he understood her like nobody else, he could relate to her and he was just a vibe to generally be around, she loved him. His name was Tavion. She couldn't tell her parents, Lauren and Miguel how bad her mental health was because they would feel bad and try to help but the help she needed was very expensive and her parents were not in the best state money wise to pay for it on top of the bills and other expenses.A few days into the wretched lockdown and she had just been scolded by her parents for something she didn't even do(it was most likely her sister that started it), but once her parents started going, they didn’t stop whatever the circumstances were. So she let it happen and went to her airy, modern bedroom (that she shared with her sister)she knew she was going to breakdown and she did not want to have to bawl her eyes out in front of her little sister so she swiftly went to the bathroom and she sobbed and she had thoughts like: ‘why is it always me’ and ‘who gives them the right to treat me like this. ’ but as normal she cleaned herself up after a good hour and went about the day. When she explained to Tavion what happened later that afternoon on FaceTime he said “Come on, you're going on a socially distanced walk with me through the nature trail.'' She didn't need any more convincing she told him to come to her house and then they'd go from there.

Winning Numbers
Numbers, Ambrose’s father had drilled into him, never lie. Numbers unlock the secrets of the universe. They set you on your life’s path. And, if the practitioner is skillful enough, they can be divined in such a way as to lead to one’s fortune.

Dragon Bound
It was a dark and stormy night... JK! Actually, it was an absolutely stunningly gorgeous day to be out bebopping around New Hope, PA. Sunny, about 76 degrees w minimal humidity and air so clear, smelling of flowers and hay and sunshine. Awesome! Honestly , if you haven’t been to New Hope, you NEED to go.

Danger lurking at Elm Farm
Little Mo (whose name is actually Charlie, but we’ll get to that later) came home from school and saw an old scruffy man with a briefcase leaving the farm. Little Mo nodded to him as he passed, but he had never seen this man before. Something told him that he didn’t come with good news and the lights around him looked all murky.

I'm a Tauries
I’m the youngest of four kids, and by far the most stubborn of them all. My mom loves to joke that I was displaying my bullheadedness before I even graced the world with my presence, by refusing to actually come out. I was born 11 days late on the 21st of April. I don’t think anyone that knows me is surprised to learn that I’m a Taurus.

The New Bitter
She caught my attention. Mirroring my moves like we were synchronised. She sits there, so carefree and confident with a smile that can’t help but bring herself attention. From where I am, she is recognisable but so far from my seat. I have great eyesight and I can see her, but something is pulling me towards knowing her.

Coastal Stranger
Telling you this, I am a much older woman now than I was. I have lost my dark chocolate hair, and the young spark in my hazel eyes, and I have lost a dream that I had once had at my fingertips. I know we all wonder whether the face of a loved one fades to nothing once they’re gone, but yours never did. Twenty years have passed and only my youth has slipped away.

The Choice
Felix had walked the path from the grain mill home every day after work for forty-years, since his fourteenth birthday. After his dad died, he walked it alone. He preferred the dirt road and bird song to the exhaust smoke and human chatter over on the main street. Surrounded by trees and sunshine, it was easier to forget he didn’t have a car. Or a wife to drive around with. Or somewhere interesting to go.

Confederate Gold
The young couple had just purchased the old house in Winchester, Virginia and were overwhelmed by the restoration process. The house looked like it would collapse if they removed one nail from the wall, but they continued the work, it was a labor of love. As Amanda and her husband Mike pulled the old pine mantle away from the deteriorating fireplace, a small black book fell to the floor. Amanda read the last entry which was dated July of 1865. "I, Edward Tidball, owner of the house "Linden" declare that I and James Semple did indeed take the gold of the Confederate Treasury. With this fortune, I built this home, but I have left the rest of this gold to the one who now reads this passage. Fair well, and maybe this treasure will absolve me in the eyes of those who fought for the lost cause. The following page has the location as four bags are buried on the property." Amanda looked at Mike, the page with the location was gone...it had dissolved into dust over time.

"I Won"
I won. Vocal recently held a short story contest with a $20,000 grand prize and I won. I’m as shocked as anyone. I remember seeing the ad a little over a month ago and being intrigued by it, not only because of the hefty prize attached (which I began to fantasize about immediately), but by the prompt as well: the story had to involve someone who came into a large sum of money, and a mysterious black book, but the rest was essentially left up for interpretation. I liked the black book– my mind was already going many different directions with it.
