The Creature
A creature slowly opened its eyes. It was waking up from a dream. A soft and warm dream, like the warmth you feel on a good sunny day. Upon waking up, it felt the cold ground. Was it cement? Tiles? It was too dark to see anything. It could only feel the surrounding. There was something on its neck. Heavy and cold. Choking its neck a little bit. There was something heavy on its wrist too. It tried getting up and something made a sound. Metal clanking. It moved around and felt walls. Two to be exact. One on right and other on left. A dim light shined and it saw its reflection on the black wall. It has two red eyes. Two spikes on each shoulder. Two spikes on each side of the stomach. And two pointy, hard tentacle. It had a face of a human and legs of a human. The creature heard a rustling. It turned around. Something was coming close.

Finding Emily
Sitting on the bench staring at the newest “From the Neighborhood” exhibit at Framed, our little city’s own version of The Metropolitan, it could have been like any other day. Usually, I’d have been here just to relish the work of local artists our little museum had chosen to highlight this season. But there is nothing usual about today. Because today, my entire world is falling apart.

The Mysterious Face of Grace
Lester Connelly was an eccentric individual; he was always looked upon as weird to those who felt they were normal. He took the same route to and from work daily for 15 years. Never complaining no matter what the weather he always walked in the door with a smile on his face. Anyone who came across Lester, which is everyone, could not resist at least forming a semi smile on their face as he was that contagious.

Dirty Underwear and Scarves from Elvis
My grandfather never told me how he came into possession of Elvis’ scarf. The pale blue scarf was in decent shape lying on the kitchen table next to a faded yellow advertisement of the 1975 New Year’s Eve show in Detroit, Michigan. Beside the scarf were two Hummel figures, a hiking boy and a girl sitting with an umbrella. Dan, my older brother, ate cereal against the counter with a smile on his face.

Time and Again
As Pamela grabbed the mail from the mailbox, she was surprised to see that a chunky manila envelope had been stuffed in there with the many bills that were becoming overwhelming lately. She lost her job when the owners of the company decided to retire and move to Florida. They gave her a nice severance package, but the economy had been so bad that she hadn’t found what she was looking for as yet. She was at the point where she was going to have to settle for something that pays less than she was accustomed to.

Finding Love Again
The Little Black Book by Ericka Hayes Veronica, a 27-year-old software designer, leaned back in her recliner as she enjoyed her Virtual Reality Meditation moment. She looked around her meditation room to study the sunrise motif, trying to keep her mind clear of thoughts for the next 10 minutes. So much was going on around her and she was trying to prepare her mind for the difficult day ahead. Counseling was Jonathan’s idea and as much as she wanted to refuse, she just didn’t have the heart to walk away from him without allowing him to explore this one last avenue. Jonathan had an extremely tough childhood and although she knew those things contributed to his bad behavior, there was just no excuse for a grown man to be so, well, selfish and immature. Hopefully he would listen to the counselor, get some help or yell at her too and storm out.

The days leading up to a wedding are typically super stressful. Everything must be perfect, and all last-minute alterations are due ASAP. Nevertheless, this particular evening took a soft family approach to the occasion. A bridal shower with good people, food, and music is just what the doctor ordered to slow down and enjoy this pivotal event in life.
