Survival Story

The Travail of Dead

By Feyi Carbon✍️Published 3 years ago 3 min read

Once upon a time, in a small village located in the heart of Africa, there lived a young girl named Aisha. Aisha was an avid reader and a lover of stories. She would listen attentively to the elderly people in the village as they told their tales of conquests and adventure. Though she was barely 16, Aisha was clever and knowledgeable and spent most of her days reading.

Sadly, one morning, Aisha woke up to find her village empty. Not a single soul was left in the village. Confused and sad, Aisha walked around the village, hoping to find someone. Suddenly, she heard a low groan from one of the mud houses. She ran over to investigate, and upon reaching the entrance, she saw a young girl lying lifeless on the floor.

Aisha recognized the girl as Nabila, a 13-year-old who lived next door. Running towards her, Aisha realized she was no longer breathing. Nabila had been caught in the middle of the deadly virus that was sweeping through the village, and within just a few days of falling ill, the young girl breathed her last.

With tears streaming down her cheeks, Aisha picked up Nabila's body. The young girl had been her friend and confidante, and now she lay there, cold and lifeless. Before leaving the village, she buried Nabila's body with great difficulty, digging through the cold hard ground.

As Aisha journeyed on, she met other people from nearby villages, all of whom were fleeing the virus. Families carrying sick members, and mothers with infants clutched dearly to their chests, all walking in despair. As they journeyed, they discovered that the virus had spread to other areas of the country, and the situation was dire.

As they travelled, Aisha and her companions came across several other corpses scattered along their path, all victims of the deadly virus that had already claimed hundreds of lives. The sight of the dead bodies made Aisha shiver in fear and sadness.

It was tough for Aisha to travel, the road was long, bumpy and winding, and she often felt her legs weighed down by the exertion. Despite her exhaustion, she knew she needed to keep moving.

The journey was long, and Aisha saw more and more dead bodies on her way. As she came across them, she would say a prayer for the soul of the dead person as the tears streamed down her face. It was a painful journey, and the memory of her parents and sisters who had passed away from the virus kept haunting her.

A few days into her journey, she came across a man who was walking alone. She stopped to talk to him, and he introduced himself as Osman. Osman had also lost his family to the virus and had been wandering around, searching for a new place to call home.

Together, Aisha and Osman continued their journey, comforting each other along the way. The journey bonded them in a way that only surviving terrible losses can. Despite their new friendship, the journey was not easy, and they faced many hardships along the way. They had to walk for miles without food or water, sleep in the open, and face the threatening wildlife with only their clothing.

On their journey, Osman caught the virus, and despite Aisha's efforts, he died a few days later. Aisha was so sad, but she couldn't stop, the thought of continuing the journey without Osman became unbearable.

Aisha eventually made it to the city where aid workers had set up emergency shelters for people like her who’d fled their villages. Here, she met other people who had also lost their loved ones. They found solace in each other's company and supported one another as they processed their losses.

The journey had been long, tiring and painful, but it had also been full of moments of deep love and connection that had changed Aisha's life forever. She had lost a lot, but she had also found something profound, and that was hope.

So amidst all the travail of the dead, Aisha found a way to hope again, and she was convinced that no matter how hard the journey gets, tomorrow always has something brilliant to offer.
