Stranger things have Happened

By Konstantinos Alexopoulos Published 5 years ago 3 min read

It was a typical mundane day, yours truly woke up to get to work nothing out of the ordinary, same routine, same steps, except today something was different, I wasn't sure what?, but deep down I knew something great would happen, or so I thought.

On my way out I missed a stair, just avoided being hit by a cab, and thats just before I got to work. I arrived safe to work thinking my day cant get any worse or strange, but boy was I in for a shock. Swiped my card, my access denied, perplexed security escorted me in. Odd I thought, were is Jimbo the guard, and Steve behind the cameras? Not thinking much I just forgot about it. I get to my cubicle and I was in for the shock of my life.

I was fired, tossed out like the trash sobbing begging, I was escorted out. I wanted to run but I was hauling my entire cubicle, I ordered uber, who drove by me waving and not stopping, I now had to caravan my belongings home. I swore to not work for anyone again , I looked up to the heavens and asked God, do me this solid and I will be forever greatfull. Suddenly out of nowhere a cyclist clips me, I yelled "watch it buddy"! he must have heard something else cause he turned to attack me. I ran and ran but couldn't shake this demon, he was right behind me, suddenly I remembered that classic flick Highlander and how churches are safe holy not to be hurt if you hide kinda places... I zigged and zagged and finally came upon a church. I ran in to hide only to be shocked I have walked into a funeral. I caught my breath, sat down, thought to leave, only to realize that cyclist is outside waiting, thank goodness he had no lock he couldn't leave his bike. I questioned God why me, but being an empathetic person I paid my respects for the dearly departed.

I walked in to an empty church, only 1 person and the priest, I trepidatiously walked to the coffin, it was a closed casket, I acknowledged the priest and gentleman there and proceded to walk out. I paused at the door, there was a black book of condolence, I leafed through it, not one signature, thinking to myself maybe its a late funeral, or sadly he had no friends...pausing I filled out my name and info, and then walked back in and sat down to at least give the departed some sort of proper farewell.

I left being at peace, the cyclist was still waiting, but when I exited with teary eyes, he just put his hand on my shoulder and left. The Uber driver found me, was upset he couldnt stop but circled back to get me. I got home and was at a loss. My career was over, the rent was due, my life in shambles but all I could think about was who was that guy that died and no one went to the funeral for.

The next day I got a call, told to dress and a limo will be picking me up. Thinking this a joke I hung up, but there was a knock soon after. I dressed and took a long ride to an office tower. I was greeted by the gentleman at the funeral, turns out he was the lawyer for the departed and having no family, he chose to give his estate to anyone who would show up at his funeral. It seems that by happenstance or divine intervention I was the only one who went. I still did not know who this was, his lawyer proceeded to tell me what I needed to do, as the billions were mine..

And so began my new odyssey......
