Selflessness

Giving and Expecting Nothing

By Cimone Kane Published 5 years ago 3 min read

I know and truly believe that each and every person in this world is human and no one individual is perfect. We all make the wrong choices from time to time, and sometimes end up in “out of the ordinary” predicaments. I’ve always been one of those people who believed that doing good things and being a genuinely pure hearted person would bring good karma. I say that because, every chance I can possibly get I try to help someone in anyway that I can. What I think makes it so golden is that I never do anything with intentions of getting something back. This one particular time I was driving my car down the road and when I stopped at a red light and turned my head, I saw a United States military veteran standing on the corner. Now the first thing that came to my head was maybe he might be an imposter just trying to scrape up a few dollars for the day. I rolled my window down and asked him was he a real veteran, he kind of balled up his face and and held up his service uniform jacket but it had some weird badges on. I said, “okay the jacket looks official but what are those goofy ass badges hanging off of it”. He laughed and said, “this is a army astronaut device right here youngin, you ain’t gone ever see nobody else with this”. At the time I really didn’t know much about it, and all of this is happening in the middle of traffic people were behind me blowing their horns, swerving around me and throwing up middle fingers. I didn’t care, because what’s the chances of a person driving down the road and seeing a former Veteran, most people probably wouldn’t think much of it but me myself I believe everything happens for a reason and maybe God wanted me to hear what Vet had to say on this day. The whole time we were talking I just kept getting a hunch to asked him how or why did he end up standing under a bridge next to the service drive, so I finally asked him and it was awkward at first because we’re two complete strangers standing next to a service drive just talking as traffic is passing. He proceeded to tell me that his wife was having an affair with the mailman while he was in the service. I asked him how did he know, and he said he had hidden cameras installed in their home. I was curious to know as to why he’d feel the need to install hidden cameras in their home, so I asked him and he said, “no matter how much you love a person young fella you always gotta make sure they are who they say they are”. As much as I wanted to burst out laughing, I didn’t and even though it was kind of funny to me he was making sense and I completely understood where he was coming from. So, I then asked him if she was the one that was having an affair why are you under the bridge. He told me he didn’t even let his wife know they were getting a divorce or anything he just left without saying a word and he put his phone in my face and no exaggeration his wife had called him 227 times. The day had already been full of surprises so after listening to his story I took it upon my self to give him 2500 dollars of my own money and I gave him the keys to one of my rental properties until he figured out what he wanted his next move to be. Til this day we still keep in touch, he moved to Arkansas and met another woman and they’re working on their 3rd kid.
