Recipe For Me
If only we could describe ourselves more accurately to be better understood.

You know those questions that you get in interviews and other occasions that people are bound to ask “So tell us a bit about yourself” You know that question that you politely have rehearsed in your head, starting with Well I…. (insert family, hobbies polite banter here)
What if we just broke it down into who we really are and what makes us tick. I know we can’t because really then it wouldn’t be a successful interview ….. but it would be fun and very freeing to do this.
So I think I would just put it to them like a recipe:
The Recipe of Me
2 Cups of wanting to be June Cleaver and not have to work, because I love looking after a home and family……but feel pressured and judged by others as a non modern women. (Also I like to dress up and do my hair and makeup, so yep June Cleaver it is)
1 Cup of Rosie the Riveter (I will work hard, as much as needed to get what needs to be done completed) I will do hard labour and enjoy it, a lot more than sitting at a desk, sitting through meetings and proudly muddling through paperwork. I’ve done that gig and also the customer service fake smile … got it down, I’ve got you covered on that!
1/8 Cup Martha Stewart, if it breaks I can fix it, if it’s ugly I can make it look nice and if it’s unorganized then hand me my label maker and stand back!
1/2 Cup Smart Ass comic who will joke about anything, some people may gasp. They will also possibly have to look a few words up on Urban Dictionary to bring themselves up to speed.
A Good Dash of a mouthy woman like Roseanne Barr. (I will say things, some people will laugh and find them humorous, some will not) Some of these things will be witty observations some will be cold hard truth.
A pinch of Shirley MacLaine’s character, Ouiser Boudreaux in Steel Magnolias, I will call you on bullshit, have a low tolerance for many things and I love my hyperactive dogs.
So mix all this together and that’s who I am. I will either turn out like the best piece of chocolate cake you’ve ever had, or the oven will overheat and you will find me too much.
We can’t say these things to people when they ask, but it would simplify so much of the “figuring people out process” But who am I kidding, not many people are this brutally honest, not ever, even in their own thoughts.
So for now just baby step it, speak out, crack a joke, loosen up, let people see you for this slightly flawed imperfect human being that we all are and embrace it. You may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but your someone’s expresso, shot of tequila or glass of wine.
