The World Bank estimates that in 2021, 9.3% of the global population, or 696 million people, lived below the poverty line (on less than $1.90 a day)³. Many factors, like the availability of fresh water and fertile land in a given area, government policies, and continuing armed conflict, can contribute to poverty, which impacts millions of people worldwide².

Many nations and organizations, including as the United Nations, World Vision, and Global Citizen, have collaborated to increase the access of the poor to clean water, enough food, inexpensive education, health care, and other necessitie².

Which factors contribute to poverty?

Poverty has several root causes all across the world. Climate change is among the primary factors 5, lack of development in employment or good jobs 7, significant changes in the business cycle with widespread unemployment during depressive or severe economic downturns 6. PSeveral additional variables, including as governmental initiatives, continuous armed conflict, and natural calamities, can also contribute to poverty 6.

What are a few consequences of poverty?

On people and society, poverty may have numerous negative repercussions. Poor health, since millions of people suffer from infectious illnesses and disorders associated to poverty, is one of the main repercussions of poverty 8. Inadequate housing, starvation, homelessness, poor childcare, dangerous areas, and underfunded schools are also connected to poverty 11.

Crime and a lack of education are some consequences of poverty. Low academic achievement is directly correlated with poverty 8.

How can our communities combat poverty?

People may contribute to the reduction of poverty in their communities in a variety of ways. They may contribute by questioning preconceived notions about poverty, raising awareness of local poverty issues, becoming knowledgeable about them, and providing resources or their time to groups working to eliminate economic inequalities 12.

Communities can also invest in sectors like agriculture, food service, hospitality, healthcare, and mining that demand a lot of manual work 14.

What organizations work to eradicate poverty?

In the world, a large number of organizations seek to eradicate poverty. Oxfam International, a worldwide development organization that mobilizes the power of people to fight poverty, is one of these organizations 15. An worldwide non-governmental organization (NGO) called the Organization for Poverty Alleviation and Development (OPAD) actively strives to reduce poverty through advancing human rights, sustainable development, and climate change 15.

A global humanitarian group called Concern Worldwide works to end poverty, fear, and persecution. It steps in to support those who are most in need in the world's poorest nations 15. These are only a few instances of the types of groups that fight poverty.

How can we raise educational standards in underdeveloped regions?

The cycle of poverty may be broken by enhancing education in places of extreme poverty. A widely acknowledged remedy to the cycle of poverty is providing children with access to high-quality elementary education and promoting their well-being 25.

Setting straightforward, understandable educational standards, beginning curricula where students are in their educational development, and enhancing accountability and pedagogy are some approaches to enhance education in underdeveloped areas 24.
