The 90s comeback we didn't know was coming but it's so FUN to see!
Remember the unmistakable squish of jelly shoes as you ran through summer sprinklers or strutted into your third grade classroom? That slightly glittery, plasticky perfection that clung to your feet like a badge of youthful rebellion? Well, buckle up, fashion friends, jelly shoes are officially back, and they're no longer just for kids.
Jelly shoes first burst onto the scene in the 1980s, but it was the 1990s that turned them into a cultural phenomenon. Remember them in translucent pinks, purples, and even neon greens. Some sparkled, some had ankle straps, all were sticky, squeaky, and endlessly cool. They were inexpensive, playful, and somehow made every outfit feel like a popsicle fueled adventure.
Just like bucket hats, butterfly clips, and low rise jeans, jelly shoes are riding the retro wave but with a modern twist. Today’s jelly shoes are sleeker, more comfortable, and often made from eco friendly recyclable materials. They're popping up in everything from fashion runways to everyday street style, offering a sweet combo of chic and cool.
This new wave of jelly shoes isn’t just for toddlers and teens. Brands like Melissa, JuJu, and even designer labels like Gucci and Valentino have jumped on the jelly bandwagon.
Here are some of the different types of Jelly shoes HERE
So how do you 'style' a jelly shoe?
-Pair Bright Jellies with neutral outfits to let them pop without overwhelming the outfit
-Go full Y2K with crop tops, denim skirts and mini bags
-Try Color Blocking with bold saturated hues
-Contrast the youthfulness with more structured or grown up pieces like blazers, wide leg trousers, or crisp white shirts.
Jelly shoes are more than a trend. They are a chance to bring a lightness to our daily lives by incorporating fun vibes, colors and fashion to the world which can seem a little too serious these days.
Let’s be real, for the better part of a decade, beige ruled the world. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, didn’t just change the celebrity landscape, they reshaped the color palette of an entire generation. Their minimalist, muted, dystopian aesthetic bled from high fashion runways into the racks of fast fashion retailers. Neutrals became not just a trend but a lifestyle. Think oatmeal bodysuits, taupe tracksuits, greige everything. Fashion, suddenly, got very... serious. Now we’re hungry for something different. Something joyful. Something fun.
Marked by tight silhouettes, muted palettes, and hyper curated minimalism felt like it was about control, precision, and structure. It was a look but it also mirrored a time of intense social media curation and filtered perfection.
After years of living in a world dressed like a desert, fashion is finally swinging in the other direction. Bold colors, playful prints, and unapologetic styling are taking over, and it’s no accident. In a post pandemic, post perfection culture, people are ready to feel again.
I personally feel the 80s and 90s were the best decades we've ever had and I truly love seeing the trends come around again and I hope the lifestyle trends also swing back around. Less phone, less seriousness, lower prices and easy living. Gen Z is leading the charge away from neutrals and into chaos and we love it. Whether it’s the rise of thrifted fashion, dopamine dressing, or TikTok’s obsession with Y2K style, this generation is turning away from bland aesthetics and embracing vibrancy, individuality, and experimentation.
Happy 90'ing! It's time to get Jelly and I don't mean Jealous :)
