My Socially DIstant Relationship: Tips for survival

Hard times should be used to bring you closer

By Matthew DennisPublished 5 years ago 4 min read

These tips can be used by anyone trying to keep hope alive during a pandemic. I met a girl last year that changed my life. She is smart, creative, and even though she doesn’t like people much, full of joy. The pandemic affected us right before our 1 year anniversary. We had a conversation in advance about what we would do if there's a lockdown. Both of our parents have ailments and even though we wanted to see each other we didn’t take the risk. Great communication but still a rocky boat. We didn’t see each other for 2 months. The crazy thing is that when we finally saw each other, our chemistry was off the charts. Thanks to these tips I’m about to give you, not only did our relationship survive, it thrived.

Communicate

I’m a stiffler for communication. You don't have to pour out your heart and soul to me. All I want is for you to be honest if something is wrong instead of saying “ I’m fine”. Fellas if she says she's fine, she's not. Communication is very important in a stable/happy relationship. Your significant other should be able to come to you and talk about anything. You guys have different needs and you have to find ways to compensate for them during your time apart.

Pick a day, sit on the phone, and talk it out. Tell them your worries and concerns. Try to find a medium that is comfortable for both of you. A lot of relationships die because of a lack of communication. I'm not talking about sitting on the phone talking about your favorite character in Naruto. You should be able to have the hard conversations and keep both egos intact. The goal is to grow together and talking is a huge part of it.

Find different ways to bond

Along with communication you have to find different ways to bond with each other while you’re apart. Find games to play. If you are gamers, then there's no doubt you should be online playing video games together. If you are not into what they play, then find a game that’s cheap that you can play together. If I had a recommendation, it would be Overcooked.

If you are not really into tech like that and rather spend your time looking at memes, then try some texting games. Texting games will give you guys an opportunity to have fun, be goofy, and get to know each other even more. If you’re not sure what to play, here are nine texting games you can play with your partner. We like to play funny picture challenges. She loves dank memes and I make memes, so it works out perfect.

*For the people that still want to explore their wild side while apart, Bustle has seventeen sexting games you should read about. Have a conversation with your partner before you start. Not everyone is into what you are. Encourage them to try but begin with a small game. Don’t skip to the Orgasm race. You're going to turn her off before you even give her goosebumps. Play into her fantasies and not your own.

Create an adventure

This is a game in the Bustle article. A relationship needs adventure, so why not plan out one. The basics of the game are to plan out your next adventure and then act it out through and through. Throw in something kinky at your discretion. Here is a PG example. “ I will pick you up at noon. We could either grab something to eat from your favorite restaurant or sit by the lake and listen to music. What do you choose?” You could either take turns giving options and making decisions. Or one person can plan out the whole thing.

Make sure someone takes notes or screenshots of the conversation so you can do it.

Get an Airbnb

Even in a pandemic, we all need a vacation. If you're not comfortable with hotels, then go to an Airbnb. I'm taking her to one for her birthday, just to get away and relax. You need to keep your sanity and find ways to relax during these stressful times. Take the time to be alone and intimate. You will grow closer together and I'm sure both of you will return home much happier. If you're cautious about that too, then you should try camping. Get a tent and the necessary equipment, and find a camping ground.

Create a movie theater under the stars

If you're a homebody, this is perfect for you. You probably don't like people and only go to the grocery store and home. There is nothing wrong with that. I spend most of my time sitting outside smoking my weed, reading, and writing. Some people like to be at home, but you can still have fun. One thing I did while quarantined was buy a projector screen and projector. When I started feeling better, I set up my theater in my garage with my soundbar. It was a surprise for my girl, and when she saw it, she loved it. I'm planning a romantic movie night under the stars. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and other streaming services have stepped their game up, giving us new classics and old. Vudu has become my best friend as well. You can rent movies in theaters for a low price.

The world sucks right now but, your relationship doesn't have to. I hope at least one or two of these things can help improve your relationship and keep the spark alive for you in these troubling times.
