What Outlander teaches us about love in the age of swipes and situationships

I think my belief in love may have been revived, which is as frustrating as it is encouraging. For a long time, I found it easier—safer even—to believe that true love didn’t really exist. Convincing myself that “fairy tale love” was a myth allowed me to feel as though I wasn’t missing out on anything other couples seemed to have. I could shrug off the Instagram-perfect relationships, the romantic anniversaries, and the declarations of “soulmates forever” without feeling a sting of envy. In fact, I had become quite content in my solitude. I had made peace with loneliness, treating it not as a punishment, but as a quiet companion.

Until…

I stumbled into the TV series based on the Outlander book series. To be fair, I didn’t expect much. I’m not usually drawn to period dramas, and it took me several episodes before I truly cared about the storyline. The show can also be complicated, with its time travel, sprawling plots, and a web of supporting characters that can be tricky to keep track of. But once it clicked, something happened: I realized Outlander isn’t just a sweeping historical adventure. At its heart, it is a love story—one that manages to defy time itself, both literally and emotionally.

What struck me most about Outlander was the depth of commitment between Claire and Jamie. It’s not a love story built only on spark or instant gratification. Their bond grows in layers—first out of necessity, then trust, sacrifice, patience, forgiveness, and an unshakable physical and emotional connection. Yes, it is passionate. Yes, it is romantic. But more than anything, it is enduring. That kind of devotion feels almost radical when compared with the fleeting, disposable nature of modern dating.

Today, romance often feels like what I call “fast food dating.” We swipe, we scroll, we sample, we discard. A match lasts only as long as the thrill of novelty, and the “next best thing” is always just a click away. But Claire and Jamie’s love is the opposite. It’s not instant—it’s earned. It’s not convenient—it’s fought for. Like a slow-cooked meal, their love takes time, effort, and care, but it nourishes in a way that something quick and easy never could.

What’s even more remarkable is that their relationship doesn’t lose intensity with time. The fire doesn’t fade after the honeymoon phase. Instead, it deepens, expanding into something richer and more resilient. They weather storms, betrayals, separations, and unimaginable hardships, yet their devotion to one another never wavers. Watching them reminds me that real love isn’t supposed to be effortless or tidy. It is meant to transform us, challenge us, and root us in something bigger than fleeting desire.

Outlander has made me reflect on my own choices. Perhaps this is why I’ve remained single for the past five years—not out of disinterest, but because I’ve known deep down that I can’t settle for a connection that doesn’t compel me the way Jamie and Claire compel each other.

So is my Jamie out there somewhere? I honestly don’t know. But what Outlander has shown me is that love isn’t meant to be consumed like fast food—it’s meant to be savored, fought for, and fiercely protected. In an age of short attention spans and endless options, Claire and Jamie’s story is a radical reminder: the greatest love isn’t the quickest or the easiest. It’s the one that endures. And maybe, just maybe, that’s the feast worth waiting for.
