LGBTQ Gender Identity: Understanding Love Beyond Norms
Gender Identity and Love

For long, we have understood gender identity as men and women. Men will fall into a romantic relationship with women and women with men. But with time, evolved thinking makes us understand what gender identity is and how it is different from biological sex.
Traditional views of gender are that of male and female. Though it may seem strange, perception has evolved.
Gender identity (GI) is how you feel inside, irrespective of gender orientation. It can be different from the sex assigned at birth.
It is a personal sense of gender, which can include being a man, woman, blend of both, neither, or falling anywhere along the spectrum.
GI is a crucial part of overall personal identity. It may change the expression, behavior, and the roles in the society.
The Spectrum of Gender Identity (GI)
Non-Binary and Gender Fluidity:
Beyond the binary framework, there are other GIs like non-binary, genderqueer, and genderfluid.
These are the ways people feel and express themselves besides binary.
Non-binary terms include those who express themselves as outside male or female. They separate their identities from the traditional genders. Pronouns used are they/them or other pronouns that reflect their identity. They might feel as male, female, or both.
Genderqueer rejects the gender binary and traditional gender norms. They may identify as both genders, neither gender or in between both genders. Sometimes, they may experience their identity as fluid or dynamic. The term is used interchangeably with non-binary at times.
Genderfluid includes gender identity that changes with time. It means the individual may change their gender expression (clothes, behavior, pronoun use), reflecting the existing state of their identity. Modestly stating- some days they feel more masculine, while other days are more feminine.
GAY and LESBIAN are not gender identities. They may belong to different identities, including non-binary, genderqueer, or genderfluid. Typically, men attracted to men are called gay, and women attracted to women are called lesbian, regardless of gender identity.
It means a non-binary man, if attracted to a man, can be gay, or maybe a genderqueer woman attracted to women can be lesbian.
Transgender Experiences
Transgender is a commonly used term for the genders that may feel different from the sex assigned at birth.
In romantic relationships, they may experience challenges like acceptance from their partner, potential discrimination, and the need for open communication.
They face difficulties in physical transitions and social prejudice.
Evolving Social Norms
Changes are noticed in the attitude and acceptance of GI. Society is comparatively more understanding towards diverse gender identities.
There is an immense impact of laws and policies on gender identities. In India, the transgender protection of rights act includes
Recognition of identity under which they can obtain a certificate of identity
Prohibition of discrimination under which discrimination in education, employment, healthcare, and access to welfare is included.
There are some welfare measures like schemes and programs for the community including social security, education, health, etc.
Supreme Court Rulings suggests
- living together of the same sex is allowed.
- whereas marrying to date is not legally recognized in India.
- However, the LGBTQ+ community and its allies continue to push for changes in the legal framework to include the right to marry, which would grant same-sex couples the same legal protections and rights as heterosexual married couples.
Challenges and Support
- Discrimination and Stigma
There is always a challenge for the person who faces diverse gender identities. Finding love and maintaining relationships is always a big task for them.
- Support Systems
Friends, family, and communities play a significant part in fostering healthy relationships. They can act as a big support system.
