Level 38

Another year, another birthday

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 2 months ago 3 min read

The title of this story is a Pokémon reference, in case you didn't get it. I prefer using the term Leveled Up when it comes to me being a year older. I've noticed when elderly people reach certain ages, someone would say to the effect that this person is 100 years young as opposed to 100 years old, which I respect. It's understandable that most people don't like using the word old. I don't get older. I level up. If you've seen pictures of me on social media, especially here on Vocal, I don't look like my age. Most people mistake me for either a high school or college student, due to my youthful appearance. I'm fine with that, because looking younger works to my advantage. If you were to meet me in person, you wouldn't know that I'm nearing 40.

Recently, I celebrated a birthday, and it was wonderful. Nothing too crazy or extravagant. A pepperoni pizza and cheesecake, because a regular birthday cake is too calorie-laden for my liking, is what I would call simplicity. In my latest story about the numerous ways I celebrate my birthday each year, I've discussed that I've outgrown birthday parties but wouldn't be completely opposed to attending special birthdays thrown by others, such as 40, 50, and so on. The aforementioned story was chosen as one of the Top Stories on Vocal for November. You can read the entire story down below.

It might be a shock to many people, but I've never gone out to a bar, club, or even a gentlemen's club to celebrate my big day. As someone who will be approaching 40 in a couple of years, those places aren't ideal for me in order to have a good time. Plus, I've gave up alcohol a decade ago. I'm a simple man and prefer simplicity over complications. I used to take myself out to eat years ago on my birthday, but due to high restaurant prices, I rather cook myself a home-cooked meal than spending a plethora of money at a casual restaurant where the food is overpriced. The last time I've had a birthday party was when I was 14. Ever since then, I find ways to celebrate my birthday at a low cost. Now, I do spoil myself sometimes by purchasing things I like, like a game console or Rangers jersey. My birthday annually has taught me to appreciate the smaller things in life. Receiving numerous birthday wishes from my coworkers and followers on social media is one example of me showing gratitude. I'm grateful for any and everything I receive.

Before I conclude this story, I would like to wish my fellow Vocal writers a happy birthday to those celebrating or are about to celebrate one this month. Also, 2025 is coming to a close soon so I want to say extend my appreciation to my loyal subscribers, fellow writers, and readers on Vocal.
