Just luck !
Yes it was just luck after all !
Jack was an old bushy, a lean and healthy septuagenarian set in his way and very reluctant to accept change as the outside world evolved around him and lived a humble life as a widower in his retirement, isolating himself from outside influence where possible. He only went into the city which was about 60 kilometers from his home when he could find no other way of transacting business, or seeking medical care ! He used his computer and even with minimal instruction was sufficiently smart enough to do his banking and much of his shopping on line, collecting items purchased from the post office sub branch nearby!
His one torment in life was that he was extremely superstitious and never made a serious decision without first writing his thoughts down in a very special Little Black Book, this fear of the unknown and the relief from knowing his special little book would set him on the right path goes way back to his childhood when, because his parents worked way out in the never never he was home schooled then when they moved into a small country town for the first time he at the very late age of 9 years was enrolled into a real school !
Starting his school life so far behind his colleagues in the classroom, began to show up in his character as an uneasy, even nervous effect when it came to answering his teachers questions orally in front of the whole class as he really struggled with topics he had no real life experience with or practical learning of ! So to combat his introverted behavior his mother bought him a little black book and instructed him, that whenever he needed reassurance he should whenever possible write down the problem or question in that special little black book and then when he was alone and time permitted he could research the answer or make decisions on a subject ! This gradually gave him the confidence to overcome his shy and awkward behavior leaving him a confident and strong adult but still heavily dependent on that little black book !
Later in life when he married he still swore by and used his little black book with an allmost religious fervor, so much so that his wife set out to convince him that with or without his little black book he would still live a successful life and have a genuinely beautiful marriage and manage quite well to make the correct decisions when needed !
She tried various ploys to wean him off his life long superstition and nothing seemed to deter him untill one day while shopping they decided to buy a lottery tick and as usual he reached for his little black book for thinking that it had been so so lucky for him in the past that he dare not buy his first ever lottery ticked with out first entering a note in his little black book ! With that his wife sternly prevented him from writing in the book and went as far as for the first time demanding she hold onto his precious black book untill the lottery was drawn some days hence !
And yes luck being what it is, and without a thought or notation in his little black book they won the twenty thousand dollar first prise ! And nothing changed once he had his book safely back in his hands he stated that, well luck is luck and they were fortunately lucky but there was no way he was about to abandon his dependency on his very, very special Little Black Book !
