The singer John Legend recently opened up about his son's health scare and how it's impacted their family in ways they never expected.

Life often takes unexpected turns, but John Legend believes he has the perfect partner to weather any storm. The 45-year-old musician, who just released his new family album "My Favorite Dream", spoke about the recent diagnosis of his 6-year-old son, Miles, with Type 1 diabetes, and how he and his wife, Chrissy Teigen, 38, have united in the face of this challenge.

The journey began during a summer camp, where "about 80% of the kids caught the same stomach virus within a day or two," Legend recalls of the initial signs of Miles' illness. "He ended up in the emergency room because of it, and they checked his blood sugar levels. Initially, they thought it could be a reaction to the infection, or he might have diabetes. After further testing, they concluded it was the latter—he had Type 1 diabetes."

The diagnosis came as a shock to their family. "Chrissy was understandably upset when she first heard the news," he shares about his wife's reaction. Shortly afterward, Teigen confirmed the diagnosis by posting a photo of Miles wearing an insulin monitor during their family's recent trip to Paris for the Olympics. "She's been amazing at quickly learning everything she needs to know," Legend says of Chrissy's response.

As for himself, Legend explains, "I'm naturally optimistic and practical. When I found out about his diagnosis, I knew it would be life-changing for all of us, but I also thought, 'We can handle this.' We've received great advice and support from many people to help us navigate this new reality."

Their bond as a couple has been their greatest source of strength. "This situation reinforces our sense of teamwork," he says of Chrissy, "and knowing we can face it together only makes us stronger."

Currently, Miles is adjusting to his diagnosis. "He's still in the early stages, so his body is producing some of the insulin it needs," Legend explains. "But as the disease progresses, we’ll need to be vigilant—monitoring everything, counting carbohydrates, and administering insulin before meals. It's just about being more aware."

The couple has faced other challenges as parents, including the heart-wrenching pregnancy loss they suffered in 2020, and these experiences have only fortified their connection. "Parenting feels like a shared mission for us," Legend says, speaking about raising Miles alongside his sisters Luna, 8, Esti, 19 months, and brother Wren, 14 months. "We’re building the life we envision for them, coordinating every step. It truly makes us feel like a united front."
