It was late on a hot July evening. Kassie was the bartender at the all night diner over on highway 2. She had been working there for 5 years and had never met the owner. He was an elusive figure whom no employee ever really saw. She occasionally worked alone as not many people drove down highway 2 anymore. The sun was setting and the soft country breeze came in through the open shutters. She was about to sit down to have her break when he walked around the corner. Dressed in a working mans uniform; hard helmet, carhart pants and a torn t-shirt, Kassie felt time stand still. She always had a twinkle in her eye but tonight it was extra bright. Kassie always treated every customer as if they were a guest in her home, but this gentlemen got some extra attention from her that night. He looked at her with a matching twinkle in his eye as they both felt their souls connect.
“I’m Sebastian”, said the man.
“I’m Kassie”, she said.
She was a smart woman whom had to make many sacrifices in her young life—He was a lost soul whom had given up on love. Sebastion was a romantic, tried love a few times, even had two daughters whom he dedicated all his time to; but he wanted more. He wanted her, and wouldn’t stop until she was his.
Over the next several weeks, Sebastian would visit Kassie at the diner where they would talk and laugh and eventually share their first kiss. They began to learn more about eachother, and it truly felt too good to be true.
Kassie had stayed in her small town after graduating college because of a health scare several years prior. To Kassies dismay, she became ill with cancer and was left unable to have children. She always wanted to be a mother but her biology and finances limited her options. She was weary about telling Sebastian her health struggles for fear it would scare him off. But, one day Kassie got the courage to open up to Sebastian.
Sebastian held Kassie as she wept, telling her she can share his beauty queens with him.
Kassie desperately wanted out of the diner. She dreamed of owning a studio where she could practice yoga, create art, and sell a good cup of coffee.
A few years goes by, Kassie still working at the diner and Sebastian working long hours and barely scraping by. Kassie was at the diner making a fresh pot of coffee one morning when a man in a white suit entered. He walked up to the counter and asked for Kassie.
“I’m Kassie,” she said.
The man in the white suit was the owner of the diner.
“I’d like to offer you my diner, free of charge, for your years of dedication and hard work”, said the man. “I bought a home in Italy and I am going to retire there and want to cut all my loose ends. The diner is yours to do what you wish.”
Kassie was speechless. When she first started working at the diner it was her last resort. She had no other options in her small town. She now has everything she ever dreamed of.
Kassie felt a sense of heat over come her body. She felt like she was about to fall. All of the sudden Kassie was startled.
“Kassie, Kassie, wake up”, said a voice.
“Kassie!” she said. It was her co-worker starting her shift.
Kassie has fallen asleep on her break. It wasn’t real. This whole time; Sebastian, the man in the white suit, it was all a dream.
Disappointed her dream wasn’t reality. Kassie got back to work, wiping down the booths in the diner, as one patron sipped his coffee at the counter.
“I was going to wake you but you had the biggest smile on your face, I thought you might want to stay where you were for a while,” said the patron as he swung his chair around.
“The coffee is cold by the way,” he said again.
The man turned his stool around.
She had an extra twinkle in her eye that matched his.
The man with the twinkle in his eye, it was the man in her dreams. It was Sebastian.
