How to Remove Blood Stains From Clothes
Actionable advice.
Accidents happen, so most of us have had bloodstains on our clothes or bedding at least once. They are incredibly difficult to take off, whether they are on white or colored clothes and especially if we do not act immediately.
Removing blood stains on clothes - tips and tricks
In contact with air, hemoglobin in the blood acts as a binder and attaches to the fibers in the fabric. That is why it is important not to allow the stain to dry out.
Keep in mind that blood is made up of protein and any source of heat - iron, steam, hot water - will only fix the stain. Always use cold water to remove blood stains!
No matter what cleaning agent you use, be careful not to rub the stained area because you will only push the blood even deeper into the fabric, but also affect the color of that portion.
Before using a cleaning solution, test it on a hidden area to make sure it will not damage the fabric and will not discolor.
If you use several cleaning solutions, always make sure to rinse thoroughly before applying the next one. Chemical ingredients can react in unexpected ways.
If the bloodstain is on a piece of clothing that cannot be washed, it would be best to take it to a dry cleaner.
Method for removing blood stains with hydrogen peroxide
One of the best ways to remove blood stains from clothes is by applying hydrogen peroxide over the stain. Unfortunately, this method can only be used for white clothes because hydrogen peroxide discolors.
Put hydrogen peroxide over the stain. (Mix hydrogen peroxide and plain water in equal proportions if you are dealing with more delicate fabrics.) Use a clean cloth to gently wipe the affected area. Repeat until the stain has become very light in color. Wash clothes in cold water with hand detergent.
The method of removing blood stains with saltwater
For colored fabrics, you can try to apply a solution of saltwater. Dissolve a tablespoon of salt in a cup of water and soften the affected area. Leave it for at least 30 minutes, then rinse and wash with a hand detergent.
Keep in mind that in many cases you need to let the stain soak overnight in cold water.
To remove dry blood stains we need to use ammonia or hydrogen peroxide. Toothpaste can also be used.
We can apply toothpaste to the stain, and with the help of a slightly damp toothbrush, we will lightly rub the stain. Let the paste act on the stain for 5–10 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
Removing blood stains from the mattress
Ammonia and water are also useful for removing blood stains from the mattress.
Dab the stain with a clean cloth soaked in a solution of ammonia dissolved in water. Open the window, avoid inhaling vapors.
There is also the possibility of using tartaric acid to remove blood stains from the mattress. With the help of a cloth moistened with tartaric acid.
Other methods of removing blood stains from clothes
Prepare a solution of two tablespoons of ammonia and a cup of water, apply it over the stain, and dab lightly with a clean cloth.
Then make a solution from a cup of vinegar and two cups of water and apply it immediately over the stain, rinse and wash with detergent.
In emergencies, you can use saliva and then cold water and soap to clean small stains on delicate fabrics. The enzymes in the composition of saliva break down proteins in the blood that make stains so hard to remove.
