The Maldives is among the most visited bucket-list destinations in the world. Its remarkable marine life attracts travellers from far and wide. But what if you don’t want to get in the water? Don’t worry, the delights of the Maldives’ underwater world aren’t reserved only for those willing to plunge head-first beneath the waves. If you’re not comfortable with snorkelling or diving, the Maldives Whale Submarine Tour offers you the opportunity to get up close to the islands' marine life.

What Is the Maldives Whale Submarine?

Although it’s called the Whale Submarine, the vessel is actually a passenger submarine. It’s also the only passenger submarine in the South Asian region.

A single ride lasts 45 minutes, allowing you to stay underwater and explore longer than a diver could. Plus, you get to explore deeper crevices of the ocean on a Whale Submarine tour. In the Maldives, divers are only allowed to go 30 metres deep, whereas the Whale Submarine can descend as far as 40 to 50 metres. This also makes the Maldives Whale Submarine one of the deepest passenger submarines in the entire world. What does that mean for you, a tourist? An experience like no other – something you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

The submarine has performed over 10,000 dives so far, allowing over 300,000 people to relish the beauty and mysteries of the deep sea, so you’re in good hands.

But who’s to say you cannot have everything? If you want to dive, you can do that too. Stay at one of the best dive resorts in Maldives, and enjoy a memorable diving experience. Wondering where to look? Check out excursions available at OBLU SELECT Lobigili.

Dining

Is there no end to the joys of the Whale Submarine? It seems not! After hours, the submarine transforms into a restaurant called The DeepSea Restaurant, where you can enjoy a delicious meal while being surrounded by stunning marine life. The interior of the submarine lights up, allowing you to observe marine life as you dine.

Cost and Other Things to Know

Of course, it isn’t free, but it’s not as expensive as you might think. In fact, the experience is quite affordable. For adults, a single ride costs a bit over USD 80, whereas children incur a cost of about USD 45.

If you have a baby, you can’t bring them on the tour due to safety concerns – and you wouldn’t want to have your precious little one at such depths anyway, would you?

Children between the ages of 3 and 11 are allowed, but if your child is below 10, maybe you should get them to try a dive in shallow water, as 10 is the minimum age requirement.

Best Time for the Submarine Experience

For most activities in the Maldives, the dry season from November to April is ideal. The weather is at its best during this time, with little to no heavy rain. Keep in mind, however, that it’s also the peak season, so you might want to book your accommodation and activities in advance.

Other Aquatic Adventures

Here are some other ways to enjoy the Maldivian seas, beyond deep sea diving and submarine excursions.

Snorkelling: One of the best ways to discover the Maldives’ marine life, snorkelling is a must-try for water sports lovers. Shallow reefs are accessible to anyone, and you don’t need any special skills.

Paddleboarding: An excellent way to explore the tranquil lagoons of the Maldives, paddleboarding is a non-motorised and more environmentally friendly activity. You’ll stand on the board and paddle your way across the stunning coves and lagoons.

Kayaking: Another non-motorised activity offered by resorts, kayaking allows you to explore the hidden corners of the islands.

Jet Skiing: If thrill and adventure are what you want, try jet skiing. You’ll speed across the waves, feeling the rush of adrenaline as if you’re about to fall off into the ocean, but the exhilaration of the ride keeps you going. It’s one of the best experiences you can have in the Maldives. Not every resort offers it, so make sure you choose one that does.
