Harold’s Dream

Windows down cruising down the highway. What else could he be doing on a sunny day. During any day with perfect weather you can expect to see Jack riding in his 2020 Range Rover with music on maximum. Since he had invested in bitcoin back when it was two-hundred dollars, he does not have to work for a very long time and has a bunch of free time. As the sky turned grey he decided to go get lunch before rain started falling since he does not want his clothes to get wet. To save time, he called Ron's Famous Steak which is his favourite restaurant. When asked his card number, he quickly realized he had made a mistake and forgot his card. Fortunately, he had some cash left in his car after a night out gambling with his wife. As he was getting ready to park he saw a man wearing dirty oversized clothes who looked suspicious. He decided to park farther away. With the cash in his back pocket, Jack then swiftly ran into the restaurant as he was racing with the rain. On his way out someone stopped him. It was that suspicious person he tried to avoid. As he was trying to do a fast walk to ignore him, he heard:

“Excuse me sir, as you were running you dropped your cash”

“Where is it?”Jack said as he abruptly stopped.

Due to his rush he had not even noticed the man had his hand out with his hundred dollar bill. He then gazed down and saw it, swiftly took it, but something caught his guard, inside the man's dirty clothes was a hidden item. He got nervous again and started to speed walk to his car. In a shaky voice the man said:

“sir excuse me.... please.. I am homeless and wanted some coins to buy as the rain is approaching”

“Go try to rob someone else BUM” Jack said as they had arrived to his car.

Rain started to fall 10 minutes after his departure from the heated exchange. “DANG IT” he yelled as he realized he left his back window open. Jack then turns around with tissues to clean his backseat but he then notices a strange item. It was black. A little dirty black notebook that got all wet from the rain. He was quick to realize that the homeless man might have thrown his dirt in the car out of anger. He opened it and saw a hundred dollars fall down from a page where it was written “pay it back”. He laughed at how stupid the homeless man was for accidently throwing away all of his savings. He then pulls up to a gas station and fills up his car with the cash. Right after he got a call, it was Rachelle one of his best friends, she said:

“OMG did you see! Bitcoin fell down 20%”

“WHAT!” he yelled

Due to this, he lost a lot of money. He said “You know what? That is the market, today it is down, tomorrow it is up”. Jack then arrives back home.

After eating and showering, he got bored. He then had an idea, he quickly ran back to his car to get the little black notebook to have a laugh at all the stupid stuff the homeless guy could have written. He brought it to bed, and started to read it. His heart sank. As he opened the first page again, a hundred dollars fell back like the last time. This time it was written “If you do not pay it back you will lose more…” He put on his glasses, and the notebook accidentally fell down. As he picked it up and opened it again, a hundred dollars fell down. He realized that everytime you open this notebook a hundred dollars falls down. From 10pm to 10am he opened and closed the notebook and got $20,000. After collecting all the cash, he saw that “ Harold’s dream will be made” was written in the notebook. He ignored it and ran to the car dealership to buy a car for his wife with his new found money. The second he signed the papers, he receives a call:

“Hey honey…” his wife said.

He replied “ Maggie, I was just going to call you, I got a surprise for you!”

Maggie said “Jack… I lost all the cash you gave me while I was gambling, I can’t even fly back home!”

Jack replied “You must be kidding me! I gave you $20,000 to pay our bills!”

He furiously hung up. And sat at the car dealership.

“Sir, are you okay?”,The car dealer said.

Jack replied “yea I just need to go eat something.”

He put the car deal on hold and went to the nearest food place. He opened the notebook to get cash to eat but he noticed new writing and it said:

“I told you. If you do not give back you will lose more.”

As he got in the Macdonalds he saw a family in line, they were six in total and took 20 minutes to order. He was frustrated at how much time they took. Finally it was time for them to pay but unfortunately, their card was denied. He was irritated, it took this much time and now they cannot even pay.

“Add their order to mine” He said to the cashier.

“Thank you so much! The kids were saying they are hungry but I do not make much. It was either food or paying the bills, now I can do both” the mother of the family exclaimed while crying.

Jack smiled and gave them another two-hundred dollars from his notebook after hearing their situation. He got his food and tried to hide his tears behind his glasses. He then got a call from his wife:

“HONEY I WON BACK OUR MONEY AND MADE EVEN MORE”

“oof, you almost gave me a heart attack” he said.

Then Rachelle called him and said:

“JACK, BITCOIN IS UP 50%!!!”

He yelled out of happiness in his car. As he pulled out the fast-food to go to the car dealership, out of curiosity he opened to notebook and it said:

“I told you if you do not give back you will lose, but since you gave back, you got more ;)”’.

Everything clicked in his mind, all the misery that was happening to him was due to him using selfishly the fortune he had come upon. He quickly went back to the car dealership and told them he does not want the new car anymore. Jack then drove to a grocery store in a poor neighborhood and said:

“If you do not have money for your groceries, I will pay for it!”

The whole neighborhood flooded the store to the point nothing was left. As he was sitting down waiting to pay, multiple people came to express their gratitude. He heard all types of stories that made him realize how people lived a totally different reality than him. Right after paying using the money that came from the notebook, Rachelle called him again:

“I AM SHAKING! BITCOIN IS UP 300%!”

The notebook's promise that if he gave he would receive more had been realized. But this time it was different, he felt empty. Before when Rachelle called him to tell him Bitcoin news, he would be all happy but this time he realized it was just money, and he already has a bunch of it. Even though he finished the $20,000 he had found, he drove to Walmart. It was 11pm and that was the only store open. Again he bought stuff for everyone but this time with his own money. He received multiple calls from Rachelle but ignored all of them. He continued helping poor families for the years to come.

One year later, he is known by everyone as the most giving millionaire in the world. His true net worth is unknown to everyone. People actually fear him since they wonder how he gets all his money. His house is not a mansion but a regular house. On a regular day, you can see a line that wraps around the block. Each person in that line will receive money to pay their bill and that is guaranteed. Everyone wonders why he is so giving to everyone except himself. As night fell down, the line cleared and Jack was finally able to get some alone time.

Since he had been giving away his own money this whole time, he never got around to reading the rest of the little black notebook. He opened it and realized the notebook was on its last page and it read:

“The dream of Harold Fouriet has finally been realized.”

Jack's eyes opened wide, he finally knew who the author of the little black notebook was. He looked his name up and saw:

”Harold Fouriet was a millionaire who gave away all of his money. To him the smile on other people’s face was worth more. He was sick and died homeless in 2020. His only dream was for the world to be graced with someone else as generous as him.”
