Conversations on Law Enforcement

By Kenny BrownPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Introduction time. I am a US Navy veteran and current law enforcement officer for a small police department in North Carolina. I have, going on roughly 8 years of carrying a gun and badge under (or actually on) my belt, and every day given is another chance and opportunity to learn something new. I treat people like people because although my job has its own high levels of stress responsibility and dangers, I still rely on humanity to get through both the hard times and the good. I wish to speak to the world or at least anyone who will listen to try and create a few new, much-needed ripples in an overwhelming pond in reference to the interactions citizens have with law enforcement. So with that being said, let's dive in and knock out the housekeeping.

So many things to say, so many places to start. I suppose a preface would be appropriate so people can understand a little bit about where I'm coming from. First and foremost, I ask that you check your politics at the door. Although I fully support the constitutional definition of speaking your mind otherwise known as your freedom of speech, there are no red or blue dominant views here, only opinions based on experience and legal precedent. I do not praise death, nor wish physical harm to anyone based on anything for any reason and that includes race, sexual orientation, religion, and everything else. I'm not an advocate to defend, law-enforcement, nor am I here to "blow whistles" or prove anyone else’s innocence or guilt. The purpose and reason of these stories and messages are to create an understanding from a slightly different point of view as I do what I can to take individual cases and the most up-to-date law enforcement situations that I can find, then give an unbiased explanation of actions that were taken, both right and wrong. Also, I will do my best to express personal thoughts and opinions that can be seen or understood from both sides of the table, which will hopefully start a community-engaging conversation about the incidents and occurrences law enforcement seems to find itself in.

I fully anticipate a mix of feelings to emerge. Then again, I also encourage response from both law-enforcement and civilian members. I do not claim to know everything. More importantly, I certainly do not have all the answers, however, from a collaborated resource list of military, law enforcement, and security personnel, past and present, I will conjure the best understanding, assess the known facts, and give non-racial profiling explanations that probably go well against major media protocols. Again, I support each and every one of the amendments and respect others' views of each of them. This social outlet for example is my personal protest and these stories will be my cadence.

Have an open mind when considering the outcomes both positive and negative. There is a lot to be said both in the defense of victims and law enforcement actions. Although they may not always seem right, what’s important is to have a discussion and an unbiased understanding of legality. I cannot stress enough the importance of having an open mind. By closing yourself off to non-factual opinion does not allow you to even accept any kind of opposing explanation or argument to a situation. This media outlet will hopefully uncover an array of issues and related topics including law enforcement, principle, and theory. Again, nonpartisan participation is a must for readers' and followers' benefit and this is not a place to join up in arms against any group. This public forum is for a sense of therapy and good ol’ shit talkin’ and believe me, I can take it.

Be respectful, exercise your rights, educate yourself, and argue responsibly. Thanks in advance, now get ready for the boom!
