Do Your Thoughts Overwhelm You and Do You Feel the Need for a Break?
How to Relax Your Mind
Overwhelming thoughts are possible symptoms of various ailments. Although the most common cause is anxiety, other conditions can cause these thoughts that seem to overwhelm you.
Negative thoughts generate constant stress in your body and sooner or later you will notice that somatizations occur in the physical body because in the body when you have negative thoughts toxic chemicals such as cortisol or stress hormone are secreted.
When an event happens in your life that you don't like, such as being abandoned, cheating on your partner, or having financial problems, it's as if you inevitably start thinking about what happened and running the mental film of events in your mind.
But the more you think about it, the more you find yourself trapped in your negative thoughts from which you feel that you can no longer escape. There are situations in which you can't escape thinking negatively about an event even after 5 or even 20 years have passed since it happened.
You have probably noticed that as you have these negative thoughts in your mind, images and sounds run through you that cause you some physical sensations. You start to feel sick, to have palpitations, to feel like crying, or to feel your blood rush to your head and you get angry.
Then after such a flurry of negative thoughts on a certain topic, other layers of thoughts usually begin to appear, this time much deeper.
Once your mind has finished rolling out all those negative thoughts you have about the fact that, for example, you have been abandoned by your partner, the deeper layers of negative thoughts usually appear.
The mind thus passes from the particular to the general.
In other words, a negative event happened to you in your life and then the mind comes and generalizes that event by extrapolating it to your whole life and taking out from your subconscious those deep beliefs created in your mind a long time ago and which have attracted that event to your life.
Such thoughts can be: "no one loves me", "men are cold and just want to take advantage of you", "all women cheat", "I feel like punching myself", "I don't want to be alone anymore" "I don't deserve to be loved."
Such thoughts are deeply ingrained in your mind, and most people try to resist them by believing that they will be able to stop them. But this method is often destructive for the body as you will do nothing but go against the flow and repress the sensations that want to come out of you.
Why do thoughts run without stopping?
Anxiety - is a common cause of overwhelming thoughts. They may precede or follow an anxiety attack.
ADHD - Some patients with Attention Deficit Hyperkinetic Disorder (ADHD) describe their inattention as those overwhelming and numerous thoughts that occur especially when overwhelmed by external stimuli (in some situations, they say, their minds "wander").
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder - The patient has obsessions or desires that are difficult to control. These obsessions can take the form of overwhelming thoughts when the patient feels that an "avalanche" of thoughts on a certain subject overwhelms him.
Bipolar Disorder - Intense and overwhelming thoughts most often occur during part of the bipolar disorder episode, but these thoughts can also occur during depression.
Agitated depression - is a term that refers to a subtype of depression, in which the patient feels agitated and not lethargic. Excessive and numerous thoughts have a high risk of affecting those patients with agitated depression compared to those with other types of depression.
What can you do to get rid of negative thoughts?
How to relax your mind and how to fight stressful thoughts:
There are several ways you can control or prevent wandering or overwhelming thoughts:
- Learn how to breathe when your thoughts overwhelm you - Take a few deep breaths and focus on the counters as you inhale and exhale the air from your lungs. This exercise will force your mind to focus on something else and not on the thoughts that initially overwhelmed you. Deep breathing will have a calming effect, which can reduce anxiety.
- Repeat a mantra - You can use a mantra (a phrase or a sentence) to repeat when needed, to drive away thoughts that make your mind wander. Even a simple sentence like "Everything will be fine" can be effective in these situations.
Eliminate stress before going to bed - If an avalanche of thoughts overwhelms you at night when you try to fall asleep, it is important to change your pre-bedtime routine so that you can relax and sleep peacefully.
It is important to eliminate stress at least 2 hours before bedtime.
You can meditate or you can try to practice yoga, it is useful to read a relaxing book or to take a warm bath, with a lot of foam. Avoid the screens of electronic devices in those two hours before going to bed.
Therapy can be an ally - In the long run, psychotherapy can help you identify the cause that leads to the avalanche of thoughts that overwhelm you.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy can be especially helpful, and a specialist in this type of therapy can teach you certain mechanisms and techniques that help you keep your thoughts under control: breathing exercises, writing thoughts on a piece of paper / in a journal, using a mantra to relax your mind, etc.
Medications that help you get rid of overwhelming thoughts - Your doctor may recommend certain types of medications that help you control the conditions or conditions behind the avalanche of thoughts, especially if these thoughts are accompanied by anxiety attacks or episodes of bipolar disorder.
Depending on your condition, a specialist may prescribe medications such as antidepressants, anxiolytics (those pills that relieve anxiety), antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, etc.
