In 2018, debut author Tomi Adeyemi took the literary world by storm with her young adult fantasy novel, Children of Blood and Bone. The book very quickly became a cultural phenomenon, debuting at No. 1 on the New York Times Young Adult Best-Seller list, landing a seven-figure movie deal, and capturing the imaginations of readers around the globe. Now, the highly anticipated film adaptation, directed by Gina Prince -Bythewood (The Woman King ), is set to bring this epic story to the big screen.

A Revolutionary Fantasy Story children of Blood and Bone is set in the mythical African-inspired kingdom of Orïsha, where magic once existed. The story is all about Zélie, a young lady from the maji who are citizens that at one point possessed magical powers. With the ruthless king abrogating magic and oppressing the maji, Zélie finds a way to return it. Along with her brother and two unexpected allies—the tyrannical king's daughter and son—Zélie begins a perilous journey to revive magic and defend against oppression. The story draws on fantasy franchises like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games but is a breath of fresh air for this reason: its main characters are Black, and the story takes place in their world.



The Vision Behind the Story

Adeyemi, raised on popular fantasy stories featuring white protagonists, was inspired to create a world where characters like her could take center stage. Reflecting on her creative journey, she told Entertainment Weekly in 2018:

"Every story I wrote [when I was younger], the protagonists were white or biracial because, somewhere along the line, I'd come to believe Black people couldn't be in stories. I was writing these magical adventures that I wanted to have, but I didn't think I could have those adventures and look like myself."
Determined to change the narrative, Adeyemi set out to write a story that was "so good and so Black" that it would demand attention—even from those with racial biases.

Although Children of Blood and Bone is a sweeping fantasy epic, it is also a poignant allegory for the issues of our time. It speaks to issues of systemic racism, police brutality, and colorism, and gives readers a lens through which to view the real-world Black experience.
The story’s powerful themes resonated deeply, leading to two successful sequels—Children of Virtue and Vengeance and Children of Anguish and Anarchy. Together, the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy spent a combined 175 weeks on the New York Times Best-Seller list, solidifying Adeyemi’s place as a trailblazer in young adult literature.


The Film Adaptation

With its bold narrative and groundbreaking representation, Children of Blood and Bone has already made literary history. Now, it’s poised to make waves on the big screen. Directed by Gina Prince- Bythewood, known for her work on The Woman King tthe film promises to bring Adeyemi’s vivid world to life and introduce Orïsha to an even larger audience.
