Raise your hand if…

“You wake up tired after a full night's rest. Your to-do list is full, and the things you once enjoyed have now drained you.

That's not laziness, that's burnout.”

In our hustle-cultured world, burnout has become a primary topic of discussion and has almost become a badge of honor. We push through exhaustion every day, believing productivity equals our self-worth and accomplishments. However, burnout is not a sign of strength; it is a clear signal from the mind and body that they are in need of rest and recovery.

What Causes Burnout

It often begins with saying "yes" too frequently. Over time, our self-worth becomes intertwined with our thinking due to constant stress and lack of sleep. Perfectionism, pressure to perform, and unclear work-life boundaries only exacerbate the issue.

From my own experience, burnout often occurs when I feel pushed beyond my mental and physical limits. Pursuing an education, for example, and striving to reach the next level has been incredibly draining. Studying in a demanding field like science, especially when you no longer have the support systems you once relied on, has caused a sense of overwhelm.

Simply put, it’s exhaustion disguised as peace.

How to Spot the Signs

Some of the key signs of burnout to look out for are:

  1. You feel chronically fatigued or irritable.
  2. Motivation and joy are replaced by numbness or detachment.
  3. Physical symptoms, such as headaches, insomnia, or tension.
  4. Don't these symptoms resemble those of other illnesses? That's because we can approach burnout in much the same way we treat other health conditions. Burnout can distort our clarity and impair rational decision-making. To tackle this "illness," we have to address these symptoms.

First, take a deep breath and remember to take it easy. When you're working to regain your composure and joy, it's important not to rush the healing process. Recovery takes time, and it's best to address each symptom individually. For example, chronic fatigue often accompanies physical issues like headaches. Consider stepping away from electronic devices for a while; our lives have become increasingly dominated by technology. Prioritizing a balanced lifestyle is one of the best things you can do for your overall well-being and health.

Finding Your Way Back

Finding your way back to a state of peace and joy can be tough.

Each day should be a fresh start, a chance to breathe in new possibilities. We should wake up feeling hopeful and ready for the blessings the day has in store. Yet, I’ve lost count of the times I’ve felt the weight of pressure and almost given up when faced with an unexpected challenge. But somehow, I always manage to push through, and I know you do, too.

Burnout recovery begins with permission—a permission to just pause. Be still.

Setting boundaries around your personal time to allow for recovery is mandatory. Reconnect with the things that bring you a sense of wholeness.

Learn to say no without the guilt.

Final Thoughts

I’ve come to see burnout as a catalyst for change. It is neither a negative nor is it positive stress response. However, it is an issue that must be acknowledged because many of us experience it. It’s the fuel that pushes you to let go and embrace the new opportunities coming your way, even if they arrive in the most uncomfortable ways.

Burnout doesn't mean you're broken. It means you've been strong for too long without support.

So, take a deep breath and remind yourself that rest is not a reward; it is a necessity. It is your time to be still.

Focus on what brings you peace and joy.
