It was a bright sunny day here in Pittsburgh. There was a nice cool breeze, the birds were chirping, kids were running around, the bees were buzzing, and the clouds were moving. "It was going to be a good day" said Louise. Louise was a 23-year-old girl working at a pharmacy just down the street from her house and lived with her mother named "faith" in a two-story building. Her dad left when Louise was ten years old, so it has been just her and her mother since. Louise's parents had bought the two-story building when she was eight years old.
Later that day, Louise had received a call from a private number. It was the judges from a competition she had entered to win twenty thousand dollars for the best cake decorating contest. Louise had in fact won the prize, she made a two-tier cake from the Chuckie movie. It was a chocolate flavour for the bottom layer and red velvet for the top with red icing dripping down to look like blood and Chuckie's face at the top. Louise was in shock and had no idea what to say, "was this finally going to change my life forever?".
Louise could not wait to get home from work to tell Faith the good news, she finally had enough money to buy her own house and get a puppy. But little did she know, there was something her mum had been hiding from her for two months now. "Was Louise's dreams about to be shattered by the news or was everything going to be okay?".
Later that afternoon, Louise had arrived home to which her mother had cooked some dinner. They sat down and started talking about how their day was. Louise began to tell Faith about her day and the phone call she had received from the contest she had entered and how she had won the twenty thousand dollar prize. Faith burst with excitement, got up and gave Louise a big hug and told her how proud she was and couldn't wait to see Louise make her dreams come true.
It was the next day, Louise had the day off and wanted to celebrate winning the competition by having some cocktails by the pool. "What better way to celebrate," said Louise. Two hours went by and it was time for Louise to dry off and relax in the sun for a bit. She had noticed a little black book on the ground by the other side of the pool and went to pick it up. Louise opened the book to the first page and was shocked at what she had seen. On the front page, it read "Faith's wishlist to complete before cancer kicks her butt". Louise closed the book, hid it in her towel, and quickly went into her room before the tears started to pour down her face.
"This can not be true," said Louise, mother would tell me if she had cancer and never keeps things from me. Louise didn't want Faith to know that she now knows about her cancer. Louise wanted to read the book and make her mother's dreams come true so she took a photo of the list and hid the black book in her cupboard so Faith wouldn't find it. The list wasn't a very long one but most of it was simple things like getting her hair done, nails done, go clothes shopping, go out to lunch with Louise and pay off the house. As much as Louise wanted to buy her own house, she also wanted to make sure Faith did the things she wanted to so she took the next day off work and decided to spoil her mother. Louise had to try so hard not to tell Faith that she knows about her cancer until later the next day.
So it was the next day and Louise had everything planned for the day and was ready to spoil her mother. They sat down for breakfast so Louise could tell Faith the plans for the day. At first, Faith was a bit skeptical about how Louise knew about all these things she wanted to do. Louise just said, "I wanted to have a girl's day so I'm spoiling you and it's just a good day". First, they were getting their nails done then Faith was going to be getting a haircut with a change of hair colour, then they had booked lunch at a nice fancy sushi restaurant where they would have cocktails and eat all the sushi they wanted. Not many sushi places would have cocktails but this one did just for Faith. Lastly, it was time to do the final wish which was to pay off Faith's house and surprise her. They made it to the bank where Faith had been paying off her house loan. A guy was standing there with flowers, chocolates, and a sign that said "congrats on paying off your house Faith". Faith started crying and gave Louise a big hug and thanked her. Louise had used all the money she had won to make her mother's dreams come true.
Faith and Louise drove home to get ready for dinner. Louise knew her mother was going to ask about today and how she knew about all these wishes so she grabbed the notebook and took it downstairs to the dining table. Faith was just finishing off dinner while trying not to cry anymore so Louise placed the book in the center of the table and waited for her mother to sit down. Faith sat down and spotted the little black book on the table and looked up at Louise. "Where did you find this," said Faith. "By the pool," said Louise. Faith began to apologize for not telling Louise she had cancer and keeping it from her. "I was scared and didn't want to make you worry about me all the time, I want you to continue with your life and make your dreams come true". Louise got up and hugged Faith and told her about how she wanted to sacrifice her dreams to make her mothers come true.
A few weeks had gone by and it was about to be a tough time for Louise. She got a phone call while she was at work, it was about Faith. She had ended up in the hospital. Louise left work and rushed to the hospital as quickly as possible. Faith had been in and out of the hospital for the past couple of weeks due to her cancer as it was only getting worse. Louise was scared that the time had finally come and her world was going to be turned upside down. She got to the hospital and was talking with one of the nurses who was saying that Faith was in critical condition and didn't have much longer to go. Louise walked into the room and started crying while holding on tight to her mother. She spent the next couple of days by her mother's side, talking about anything and everything about all the good times growing up. It was 5 p.m., Faith had gone to sleep forever.
It was just a few days later, it was the day of Faith's funeral. This was Louise's worst day ever as she had to say her final goodbyes to her best friend. Louise had to think about getting rid of her mother's stuff which was going to be hard. She even had to think about selling their family home just so Louise had money to live and could afford her own place but she wasn't sure if she could do it. After some thinking, Louise decided to only sell some of her mother's belongings as she needed somewhere to live otherwise Louise would be homeless for a while due to her job going downhill. A couple of weeks had gone by and things were just getting worse. Louise lost her job and was running out of things to sell so she had the money for food. She had been applying for jobs but was having no luck.
Louise didn't lose everything, but she lost the most important person in her life, her mother.
