20 Things You Should Never Tell Anyone

The Chaos That Ensued When I Did

By Author kelechiPublished 11 months ago 4 min read

We all have secrets hings we hold close, things we hope never slip from our lips. But what happens when you spill those secrets? What happens when you tell the things you should never, under any circumstances, share?

I learned the hard way.

It started as a harmless experiment. A friend and I were talking about secrets how some should stay buried, how others could ruin lives. Jokingly, I said, “What if I just… said them all out loud?” My friend, being the bad influence that he is, laughed. “Do it,” he dared me.

And so, I did.

1. Your Actual Salary

It started small. At work, I casually mentioned my salary to a coworker. “Oh, I make $65,000,” I said. Big mistake. Suddenly, jealousy sparked. My coworker, who had been at the company longer, made less. He stormed into HR, demanding a raise. HR called me in for a "chat." Lesson learned: Keep your salary to yourself.

2. Your Friend’s Deepest Secret

Next, I was out with friends, and we were playing a game of “Never Have I Ever.” Someone mentioned secrets, and, feeling reckless, I blurted out, “Well, Mark still sleeps with a teddy bear!” Silence. Then, laughter—until I saw Mark’s face. He wasn’t laughing. He left early. We haven’t spoken since.

3. How You Really Feel About Your Boss

You know that moment when you forget you’re speaking out loud? That happened at work. I was on the phone with my best friend, casually ranting: “Ugh, my boss is so incompetent.” Guess who walked in just as I said that? Yep. My boss.

4. Your Internet Search History

You think yours is clean? Think again. In a moment of misguided humor, I showed my search history to my cousin. He read out loud: “How to survive a bear attack, easiest way to fake an illness, do plants have feelings?” Yeah. He won’t let me live it down.

5. Your Biggest Fear

I told my younger brother that I was terrified of clowns. Guess what showed up at my birthday party? A clown. He thought it was hilarious. I hyperventilated. He still laughs about it.

6. The Worst Thing You’ve Ever Done

At a family dinner, my dad asked, “What’s the worst thing you ever did as a kid?” Feeling bold, I admitted, “I broke the window and blamed it on the neighbor’s kid.” My mom gasped. My dad gave me the look. I was 10 when it happened, but somehow, it still mattered.

7. That You Stalked Your Crush Online

“Oh yeah, I know she loves hiking because I saw her old Instagram posts from 2016.” Silence. My friends stared at me. I realized I had just admitted to deep-stalking someone. Never. Again.

8. Your Opinion on Your Friend’s Relationship

My friend asked, “Be honest. What do you think of my boyfriend?” I should have lied. Instead, I said, “I think he’s controlling and kinda boring.” She didn’t talk to me for three weeks. They’re now engaged.

9. That You Read Someone’s Diary

As kids, my sister kept a diary. I read it. Years later, I admitted it. She lost her mind. Some things should stay buried.

10. What You Really Think About Your Mother-in-Law

Let’s just say, calling her "a control freak with too many opinions" at Thanksgiving was a mistake.

11. That You Pretended to Be Sick to Skip Work

I posted a picture of myself at the beach while I was supposedly "sick." My boss saw it. End of story.

12. That You Cheated on a Test

In college, I once confessed to cheating on a test. I thought it was funny. My professor did not. I had to retake the class.

13. That You Dislike a Gift Someone Gave You

I once said, “Oh, I loved the sweater you got me!” My cousin replied, “I never got you a sweater.” Whoops.

14. That You Don’t Like Someone’s Cooking

At a dinner party, I whispered, “This soup is terrible.” The host heard me. She never invited me back.

15. That You Lied About Watching a Popular Show

“Oh yeah, I totally watched Breaking Bad!” Someone asked me what I thought of the ending. I panicked. They knew I was lying.

16. That You Secretly Hate a Popular Trend

When I said, “Pumpkin spice lattes are overrated,” my fall-loving friend stared at me like I had insulted her entire existence.

17. That You’ve Eavesdropped on a Private Conversation

I once repeated something I overheard. Turns out, it was a very private conversation. Awkward.

18. That You Faked Liking a Friend’s Artwork

I told my friend I loved her painting. Then, she asked me to buy it. I had no way out.

19. That You Lied to Get Out of Plans

I told a friend I had a “family emergency” to skip dinner. Then, I posted a picture at a party. Busted.

20. That You Regret Telling the Truth Too Much

After my chaotic experiment, I realized something: Honesty isn’t always the best policy. Sure, some truths should be shared, but others? Keep them locked up.

My friendships have mostly recovered. My boss still side-eyes me. My cousin still brings up my search history. And Mark? He forgave me. Kind of.

Moral of the story? Some things are better left unsaid.
