10 Things to Boost Your Resilience to Keep Going
When the Going Gets Tough
Life can get crazy sometimes, like a rollercoaster hurtling towards endless deadlines. One thing leads to another and before you know it, the day has gone, and you've forgotten the one thing that you had to do that day. Missed meetings or appointments. Late deadlines, and that computer glitch that made you lose half a day's work. There is always something going on at work and not everything ends well.
When your personal life blows up, it's even harder to keep going. A death in the family, an accident, a painful break-up with a sudden change in living arrangements. People around you are also suffering, and you cannot get away from the hurt. It means you have no escape.
When you are having a bad spell, it's easy to start feeling negative and question the hardship. I know, I've been there many times. You suddenly feel overwhelmed and there is no end to the madness. You want to get off the proverbial rollercoaster and just sit a while. Catch your breath and think. Let your brain catch up with the new reality for a sec.
Most often, we bounce back from setbacks and carry on as we were, but that is not always the case.
Here are 10 mindsets that can build your resilience when the going gets tough.
1. Anything worth having is worth fighting for
Are you feeling under pressure from a deadline or a looming exam? Try and think positive and your reasons for being in this situation in the first place. Why are you doing this? Will it get you where you want to be? Look at the big picture. If you can see a clear benefit for going through the stress, then go for it!
2. It's okay to not be okay.
This is one of my mantras. I often have awful days after being triggered. It's usually something small that nobody else can see apart from me. I have my "moment of sadness," then I pick myself up again. Yes, I'm damaged but I can get through it and I never take my pain out on anybody else. Most people who know me will say that I'm a positive and happy person.
3. Failure isn't a bad thing
Sometimes we learn from our mistakes. I often "pretend" to make mistakes when I'm teaching to show my students that it's okay to make them. Sometimes, our greatest failures were our turning points to something even greater.
4. A learning opportunity
If something isn't going your way, then maybe you can think outside the box. Is there a lesson in this situation? What can I learn from this?
5. You don't have to have it all figured out
Seriously, who does have it all figured out? I don't think anyone has and I think it's okay to go through life and still have some surprises along the way. Being organized and know what's going on is one thing, but if you dictate every second of every day - life will become boring.
6. You can get through this
No matter where you're at and what you are trying to do, you've got this. You've gotten this far and you have to believe that you are doing this for a reason.
7. There is light at the end of the tunnel
There is always a light at the end of the tunnel because that is your goal. It's where you are headed and you will get there.
8. You're not alone
This is an important one to remember. Wherever you are at in life, you are not alone. There will always be people who have been where you are and can help you through it. If you're in a tough spot, reach out for support. There is help out there.
9. Remember what really matters in life
This is something to bear in mind when you are under pressure. Sometimes we forget the reason why we do things like deadlines and exams in the first place. Try and look at the big picture here and see yourself when you have finished your goal. What does it look like for you?
10. Believe in yourself
Definitely believe. If you can believe it, you will achieve it.
The most important thing to remember is that this is your life. You've only got one life and you have to follow your heart to be happy. Listen to your inner voice and know that you can get through anything when you believe in yourself.
