The Mystery of the Gobi Desert Monster

Sounds

By Mihaela MaričPublished 12 months ago 1 min read

In July 1990, four Czech adventurers embarked on a quest to locate the elusive Mongolian deathworm, a creature speculated to have inspired the monster featured in the film Doom. Believed to inhabit the depths of the Gobi Desert, they traveled to Mongolia, rented an ATV, and enlisted local guides to assist in their search for this formidable creature, which can reach lengths of up to six feet, possesses the ability to spit corrosive acid, and can emit electric shocks. Legends suggest that these creatures prefer to conceal themselves beneath the sandy dunes, emerging primarily during the wetter months of June and July, making their timing seemingly ideal for a sighting. However, the team faced the challenge of attracting the creature, as its dietary preferences remained a mystery; they constructed a thumper, a device designed to produce rhythmic sounds in hopes of luring the worm to the surface. Despite two months of traversing the expansive desert, including dunes and rocky terrains, their efforts yielded no results. Ivan McCurley, the expedition leader, returned to the Gobi Desert on two occasions, initially attempting to draw the creature with loud blasts and later utilizing a small aircraft for aerial reconnaissance. Over the years, numerous expeditions from the United States, Britain, and New Zealand have sought the deathworm, with many individuals traveling independently from around the globe, yet none have succeeded in finding it. The Western world first learned of the Gobi Desert's mega worm through American paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews, who, in 1926, documented the creature in his writings. During a meeting with Mongolian officials, Andrews received detailed accounts of the creature's appearance, described by one as resembling a two-foot-long sausage without a head or legs, and noted for its extreme venom, which could be lethal upon mere contact.
