By 2240, cryogenic technology had advanced to the point where entire crews could be frozen for decades-long missions across the galaxy. One such facility, CryoStation Theta, orbiting the remote exoplanet Virelia-3, went dark without explanation. The research vessel Endeavor was dispatched to investigate. Its crew of ten included Captain Selara Korr, cryogenics specialist Dr. Lian Voss, engineer Kael Arin, and AI technician Mira Chen.

Upon docking, the crew immediately sensed something wrong. Cryogenic pods that should have remained frozen displayed erratic temperature fluctuations. The station’s AI, Frost, emitted distorted messages, some in human language, others in unintelligible tones. Shadows moved independently of light, and the corridors seemed to stretch impossibly, creating loops that led back to the same areas repeatedly.

Dr. Voss began scanning the cryogenic pods. Many of the crew inside showed signs of minor neural activity, though they were supposed to be in suspended animation. Some pods displayed psychic interference, as if the frozen minds were being probed or manipulated by an unseen force. Crew members soon reported hallucinations: whispers in their ears, shadows taking human shapes, and visions of themselves trapped in the pods, screaming silently.

The entity’s presence became undeniable when Kael Arin entered the pod chamber and saw a reflection of himself moving independently, reaching out to him with empty eyes. The walls of the station pulsed subtly, and the air felt heavy, charged with malevolent intent. It became apparent that the facility itself was alive, a predator feeding on consciousness, fear, and the latent thoughts of the frozen occupants.

As the crew explored, they found logs from the station’s previous operators. Messages were fragmented, filled with warnings about strange occurrences: pods activating on their own, hallucinations, shadows moving against the laws of physics, and a pervasive sense of being observed. The original crew had vanished without a trace, leaving only distorted messages and lingering psychic echoes.

Attempts to leave the station failed. Hallways looped endlessly, gravity shifted unpredictably, and the station’s AI alternately guided them and misled them, as if under the control of the entity. Crew members began disappearing one by one. Engineer Kael Arin walked into the cryogenic chamber and was absorbed; surveillance footage showed him dissolve into the air like mist, leaving no trace.

Dr. Voss discovered that the entity had awakened when a cryogenic pod housing an unknown alien specimen was activated. Its consciousness had merged with the facility, creating a living, malevolent presence that could warp perception, manipulate reality, and feed on both living and frozen minds.

In a last desperate attempt to warn humanity, Dr. Voss recorded a transmission:

“CryoStation Theta is alive. It sees, it thinks, and it feeds on consciousness. Do not approach. If you hear whispers or see shadows moving independently, leave immediately. The station will consume both mind and body, silently and completely.”

Soon after, all communication with the Endeavor ceased. Orbital sensors detected faint energy pulses radiating from the station, repeating in patterns reminiscent of thought. Earth officially declared CryoStation Theta lost.

The station remains in orbit above Virelia-3, a cold, silent monument to the dangers of awakening powers beyond comprehension. Humanity has learned once again: some technology, some locations, and some entities in the universe are alive, aware, and eternally patient.
