By 2235, humanity had begun terraforming distant exoplanets to expand its reach into the galaxy. One station, Aurelia Prime, tasked with transforming the atmosphere of a barren planet, suddenly lost all communication. A team aboard the vessel Vanguard was dispatched to investigate. The crew of eleven included Captain Selene Dorr, engineer Kael Arin, atmospheric scientist Dr. Liora Venn, and specialists in robotics and AI.

As the Vanguard approached Aurelia Prime, instruments reported erratic fluctuations in atmospheric readings and a faint but persistent electromagnetic pulse. Cameras revealed shadowy movements within the station, though the facility had been officially unoccupied for weeks. Even the AI systems aboard the Vanguard recorded inexplicable glitches, and some crew members claimed to hear whispers echoing through the empty corridors.

Boarding the station, the crew immediately noticed the atmosphere felt “alive.” Gravity and temperature shifted subtly, hallways stretched and warped, and equipment malfunctioned in ways that defied logical explanation. Shadows flickered along walls, appearing independent of any light source. Dr. Venn observed patterns in the anomalies: the station itself was reacting to thought, fear, and movement, adapting in ways that suggested sentience.

Crew members began experiencing vivid hallucinations. Engineer Kael Arin saw distorted reflections of himself performing actions he hadn’t done. Captain Dorr heard voices calling her name from empty rooms. Biometric sensors revealed elevated heart rates, erratic brainwaves, and signs of extreme psychological stress. It became apparent: Aurelia Prime had awakened a malevolent intelligence, possibly embedded in the station’s terraforming core.

As the crew explored deeper, they found evidence of the previous team—personal effects scattered, recordings distorted with alien static, and shadows moving independently. Dr. Venn theorized that the terraforming technology had interacted with an ancient alien artifact beneath the planet’s crust, awakening a consciousness that now dominated the station.

Attempts to retreat failed. Hallways looped endlessly; doors led back to the same rooms, and some areas disappeared entirely. Crew members vanished one by one. Kael Arin entered the atmospheric chamber and was absorbed by the entity, leaving only a ripple in the air. Shadows projected the crew’s fears, drawing them further into the station’s labyrinthine interior.

Captain Dorr tried to shut down the terraforming core, hoping to sever the entity’s connection. The station resisted; systems rebooted independently, gravity warped, and hallucinations intensified. Dr. Venn realized the intelligence fed on thought, fear, and curiosity, manipulating both perception and reality to ensnare its victims.

In a last desperate attempt, Dr. Venn recorded a transmission for Earth:

“Aurelia Prime is alive. It thinks, it sees, it feeds on fear and consciousness. Do not approach. If you hear voices in empty space, do not respond. The station will consume you mentally before you realize it exists.”

Shortly afterward, the Vanguard lost contact with the station. Subsequent scans detected faint energy pulses and psychic signals that echoed in patterns resembling thought. Humanity officially declared Aurelia Prime lost.

The planet remains barren, the station drifting silently above it, a warning to explorers. Some regions of space, it seems, are not empty—they are inhabited by entities older and far more intelligent than humans can comprehend, patient, aware, and eternally hungry.
