The Ghost Ship of Proxima B
A derelict spacecraft orbiting Proxima B conceals a horror that consumes all who enter.
In 2205, a human research team aboard the vessel Intrepid was sent to investigate Proxima B, an exoplanet orbiting the star Proxima Centauri. Orbital scans had detected an abandoned spacecraft of unknown origin, drifting silently above the planet’s surface. The ship’s AI, Athena, warned that the vessel’s systems emitted strange energy readings, but curiosity and scientific duty compelled the crew to investigate.
The crew of ten included Captain Rylan Cross, engineer Mira Sol, xenobiologist Dr. Taren Voss, and communications officer Leah Chen. As they boarded the ghost ship via an automated airlock, an eerie silence greeted them. Corridors stretched endlessly, metallic surfaces cold and reflective, covered with alien inscriptions that seemed to pulse faintly.
Almost immediately, the crew noticed strange phenomena. Shadows moved independently, systems flickered without reason, and whispers echoed through comms channels, mimicking their own voices. Dr. Voss realized the ship was psychically active, feeding on the fears, memories, and thoughts of those aboard.
As they explored deeper, crew members began disappearing. Mira Sol walked into a maintenance corridor and never returned. Surveillance cameras showed her walking into a wall—but the footage revealed nothing beyond empty air. One by one, hallucinations intensified, blending past regrets, personal fears, and impossible alien visions into waking reality.
Captain Cross attempted to seal the ship and retreat to the Intrepid, but the ghost ship seemed to manipulate its own geometry. Corridors looped endlessly, doors led back to the same room, and spaces expanded impossibly. Crew members reported seeing doubles of themselves—creatures that mirrored their every move but moved with independent intent.
Dr. Voss analyzed the alien inscriptions and discovered that the vessel had once belonged to a civilization long extinct, consumed by a sentient cosmic entity. The inscriptions served as a warning: the ship was not abandoned—it was alive, and it continued to hunt, feeding on consciousness, twisting perception, and bending reality.
In desperation, Captain Cross attempted to jettison the ghost ship into Proxima B’s atmosphere, but the entity resisted. The vessel’s power systems reconfigured autonomously, trapping them in a psychic maze. Crew members willingly succumbed to hallucinations, walking into walls or abandoning their physical forms to become part of the entity.
Dr. Voss recorded a final log to transmit to Earth:
“Proxima B harbors a horror beyond comprehension. The ghost ship is alive. It sees you. It consumes thought, memory, and fear. Do not attempt to approach it. If you hear a voice calling your name, it is not human. Leave it untouched.”
The Intrepid lost all contact with the ghost ship. Automated sensors later detected only faint energy pulses and anomalous psychic readings in orbit around Proxima B. The ghost ship continues to drift silently, a sentinel of terror, waiting for the next explorers who dare approach.
Earth officially declared the mission lost. Astronomers occasionally detect inexplicable signals emanating from the Proxima system—whispers in impossible frequencies. Humanity has learned that some relics of the cosmos are not meant to be studied, and some voids in space are hungry, patient, and eternal.
