Sarah had been planning this weekend getaway for months. She had found the perfect cabin online, nestled deep in the woods, with a cozy fireplace and plenty of space for her and her friends. They all had busy lives, and Sarah was looking forward to a few days of relaxation and fun.
When they arrived on Friday night, the cabin was just as she had imagined it. The air was crisp and cool, and the woods were alive with the sound of crickets and rustling leaves. They settled in quickly, unpacking their bags and pouring themselves glasses of wine.
As the night wore on, they played board games, cooked dinner, and chatted about their lives. Sarah couldn't help but feel a sense of unease, though. There was something about the woods that made her feel on edge. Every little sound outside made her jump.
Her friends didn't seem to notice anything unusual. They laughed and joked, teasing each other and enjoying each other's company. Sarah tried to join in, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching them.
As the night grew darker, Sarah decided to turn in. She went to her room, which was at the back of the cabin, and tried to settle into bed. But every time she closed her eyes, she heard a scratching sound at the door.
She sat up, heart racing, and listened intently. The scratching had stopped. She tried to convince herself that it was just an animal outside, but the sound had been too deliberate, too insistent.
She lay back down, but the scratching started up again. This time, she could hear something breathing heavily outside the door. She sat up again, paralyzed with fear. She heard her friends stirring in their own rooms, but they didn't seem to hear anything.
The scratching continued, growing louder and more frantic. Sarah knew that she had to do something. She got up and approached the door, her heart pounding.
As she reached for the doorknob, the scratching suddenly stopped. She hesitated for a moment, then slowly opened the door.
There was nothing there. The woods outside were dark and silent. Sarah took a deep breath, relieved that it was all in her head.
But as she turned to go back to bed, she saw something move out of the corner of her eye. She froze, heart racing, and turned back to the door.
There, in the faint light coming through the window, she saw a pair of glowing eyes staring back at her.
She screamed, waking up her friends, but it was too late. Whatever was outside had already gotten in.
Her friends rushed into her room, panicked and confused. Sarah tried to explain what she had seen, but they didn't believe her. They told her that it was just her imagination, that she was letting the isolation of the woods get to her.
But Sarah knew what she had seen. She spent the rest of the night sitting up, clutching a blanket around her, listening to the sound of scratching and breathing just beyond the door.
In the morning, when the sun finally rose, they went outside to investigate. They found nothing unusual. The woods were just as they had been the night before, quiet and serene.
But Sarah couldn't shake the feeling that something was still out there, watching them. As they packed up their things and drove away from the cabin, she couldn't help but wonder what they had left behind in the woods.
