A Small Fortune
Sitting in Their cubicle, The Omnipotent One grinned begrudgingly to Themself as They wove Marcus’ life tapestry. Their manager stood over them while They worked. Every stitch in the tapestry was a choice or event in Marcus’ existence. The Omnipotent One sat at Their desk quickly changing the course of Marcus’ life by providing for him.

The Wishing Book
The smell of rain and dirt quickly saturated the way home. The rubbery bottoms of my Converses were starting to slip off the slick thin metal of my bike peddles. I can’t remember which way I needed to go. Was it take a left past the maple or before it? I hate first days of school! I couldn’t have just asked for a ride home from that dude who offered? He and I knew it was going to rain. Whatever, I know it’s somewhere up these hills. Maybe I can take a short-cut.

The Curse of the Wicked Wizard
Beginning As I was cleaning the basement of my family’s inheritance home that is now in foreclosure, I noticed there was a box labeled DO NOT TOUCH! I took the top off the box and I could not believe what I discovered newspaper articles, magazine clippings, and a little black book with $20,000.00 in it! I was flabbergasted and could not believe what I was seeing. I did not know if I was more shocked about the money or the way my grandfather died!

The Shifting Tales of the Little Black Book
The Little Black Book was the name of the inn where my father died. He was traveling around the villages and had heard tales of a strange inn where the passerby would avoid but a vast fortune was rumored to be on display. Travelers like him had no choice but to stay in whatever accommodations were available nearby, and the Little Black Book was the only inn around for miles.

The cursed fortune.
Madeline and me grew up in financial scarcity. After mother died when we were 12, the foster system took us in. Me and Madeline had to jump from family to family throughout the system, so we moved around often. It wasn’t advantageous enough how our foster parents abused their power. Laying in bed at night with a thin sheet covering my body, I stare at the ceiling fan mounted above me wondering when this nightmare come to pass. We loved mom and how funny and creative she was. We cherished every moment of her contagious laughter and beautiful graceful grin when we’d play video games together on multiplayer mode. We didn’t have much however, our mom did whatever she could to assure me and Madeline could face the world.

Roses & Heather
A blinding glare from a cloudless summer sky reflects on Amelia’s freshly placed tombstone. As her casket descends into the earth, I realize that she is taking all that made me happy with her. I reach out, fresh cut flowers in my grasp. Calluna, the Scottish heather that decorates our family’s estate. I tell myself to let them go. To let her go. Just like the friends and family that circle her resting place will all let go. I stand and stare, bouquet in hand, waiting for my fingers to uncurl.

The Coin
It has been 2 hours since I found the coin. Scurrying to work in my typical fashion, wearing the same scrubs I wore on my last shift at the office. They smelled fine, and frankly I was just too tired to care. Then, everything changed. As I was stepping onto the subway platform, I noticed a shiny silver dollar just lying on the ground. Picking it up I noticed the word “no” scratched into the surface of the coin, and it made me smile. Dad always called me his “NONO girl” partially because it was short for Nola and partially because I was always up to something I shouldn’t have been. Suddenly, I felt lucky.

The Printing Press
Zachary A. McCoy The scalding hot plates slipped easily from the hard plastic rack into Herbert’s hands. As he caught the dishes he mindlessly folded them like a deck of cards. His body mechanically swiveled around and placed them in a stack ready to be carted in the dining room. Down the line, Franny was scrubbing a metal pan covered in egg to no avail. Finally, opening the window above her station, Franny threw the dish out the window. Metallic clangs could be heard as eggs and metal skittered across the nursing home parking lot.
