Oranges
June 25, 1990 Why were the oranges placed so oddly? There was one on top of the dusty mantle. One sat precariously on the crook of the stairway banister. Several were balanced on the armrests of the couch, still more had made their way to the tops of pictures, mirrors.

A Date with a "Vampire"
His driver’s license said that his name was Kevin, his social media accounts said that his name was Vladimir, and he looked like his name should’ve been Chase. With his silver nose ring clinging to his left nostril, his platinum blonde braid stretching down to the center of his back, and that blood-red leather jacket that he wore with just about everything, there was this cool and dangerous vibe that he gave off. Even those who claimed that he wasn’t their type couldn’t help but DM him. Maybe it was the muscles, or maybe it was that lovely set of icy blue eyes. Whatever it was, something about him made hearts fall like dominos. Even though his driver’s license stated that he was thirty-three, he claimed on his many social media accounts that he was a vampire who was born and then reborn in the 17th century. His commitment to this claim was enough to score him a date with a particular lady he found on Instagram.

A touch of the supernatural
Not so long ago, there was a challenge to talk about “If this, then that”, where the community in Vocal would talk about a show or a movie and then recommend similar ones. I submitted two entries, but there was a third one I wanted to add but I didn’t manage to do so before the deadline. However, I was left with the itch to write it anyway and share it with you, my dear readers.

Blood & Wine
Neve knocked on the door of her date’s house and chewed her lip. The air was cool and it chilled her legs as she stood on the gravel pathway. She looked around at the beautiful property as she waited; the lawn was lush and had the greenest grass she’d ever seen. The front of the house was lined with mulch and had lovely blueish purple hydrangea bushes that hugged the grey stone walls of the house. Her gaze looked back up at the overcast sky and then back down to the deep red door in front of her. Neve sighed and hugged her arms tightly to herself. ‘She sure is taking her time.’, she thought as she shivered. She reached her hand out to knock on the door again when it swung open to reveal the object of her affections.

Inhabitation
I was awakened suddenly by a loud noise in my backyard. When I looked to the clock, it read exactly 3 AM. The noise happened again making me jump. I stumbled out of my bed with my heart pounding in my ears as I ran towards the window to look into the backyard. As I threw back the blinds, I saw some sort of aircraft resting on the ground. It was in the shape of a UFO that you see on TV... but I knew that my eyes had to be playing tricks on me.

Lena and Victor
Lena pranced barefoot down the sidewalk, her slim heels held in one hand by two delicate fingers. Victor watched her with a smile and followed slowly behind, mesmerized by her childlike innocence. She whirled to face him, her white satin dress flaring around her, a coquettish smile stretched across her lips.

A Black Cat
A single black cat, sitting in the darkness. Maybe it’s it’s sharp yellow eyes, or the way it holds itself, but you just aren’t comfortable the way you were a few minutes ago. You were walking down the road with your best friend, talking and laughing about things you’d done in the past. And the cat runs onto your path. The cat is unsettling. But your best friend doesn’t seem to notice. All they notice is that there is a cat on the street. They look shocked at seeing it. “Oh no, someone must have abandoned him! We have to take him home.” your friend says. You don’t want to say no, they may think you’re being heartless, so you say yes. You continue walking. Your friend says something funny, but you no longer have the heart to laugh full out. Yet you attempt to, if only to make them happy. They notice something wrong anyway, your friend has always been pretty sharp. “What’s wrong? Are you ok?” they ask. But you can’t tell them, not now, because you’ve notice the cat watching you, no, daring you to say something. So you say an unconvincing “Nothing” and look away so you don’t have to see the look of worry and disappointment on your best friend’s face.

Monolith 2
