At the Top of the Maid's Staircase
Staying home from school was a luxury, and one I was not given too often. But on this occasion I would say I was quite ill, near death for sure. My mother wasn’t too happy when she pulled the thermometer from my mouth, the fever tipping just over 101 degrees. I’d certainly not be allowed to attend school. As she stood there over me waving the thermometer and grimacing with displeasure, she made a decision. Not wanting to miss out on her daily lunch mimosas and gossip fest with her friends to stay home with a feverish child, my mother decided that 11 years old would be the perfect time for me to learn how to fend for myself, plague and all.

Glimmer
I sprung out of my bed so quickly that I almost knocked myself hard onto the ground. Crap. Crap. Crap. I couldn't believe that I forgot about the plans I made with Sarah. We were supposed to meet up at the park at exactly 12 o'clock midnight, but instead, I was snoozing my head off the whole hour. My eyes were still adjusting, so I was practically walking like a chicken without a head in my room for the first few minutes.

Amelia
I fumble about in bed, my body temperature steadily increasing as I grow a fever unlike any I’ve ever had in the past. I can feel sweat droplets tumbling off of my forehead and trickling down my temples towards my chin. I begin to cry a light sob, almost inaudible as I rock back and forth in bed, whispering for my partner to please wake up, to please help me snap out of this. I’m hot, I can’t catch my breath. I feel for my partner, but he’s not there. I can’t feel his presence at all.

Of Course I’d Kill for It
Everyone always complimented Lily, such beautiful eyes. But she wouldn’t take them to the grave. Green and Hazel. I couldn’t stop thinking of those eyes. Soon they would be mine. I adored and hated heterochromia. The asymmetry on a face, one eye green, one eye hazel. Yet it somehow made a face more intriguing. Same as the gray strands of hair from the brown-haired boy. I grin, now his hair will no longer grow. Same as the tongue of the woman who bragged she could eat a ghost pepper without sweating, now she will never taste or brag. They were in the back of my closet after all, soon to be joined by the eyes. I chuckle, I may one day have a whole person in my closet.

Undeath
Four, three, two, one and she's back. She was gone for eight minutes and nine seconds this time. How long could she take this? How long before she could go and never have to return? That's why she had volunteered. To be able to go and never have to return. This was her way out. Every time she made up her mind to not go back she was pulled away from death.
