Scarecrows
Scarecrows By A. Michael Day Hassan had paid good money to be in the boot of this car. He considered himself extremely fortunate as he felt each lurch inside the dark, cramped, trunk, as it rocked back and forth. He was no longer on the smooth tarmac of a maintained road, Hassan guessed his smugglers were driving along a dirt track. He could feel every pothole as he bounced around within his claustrophobic compartment like a ball bearing in a pinball machine. Nevertheless he was excited!

Troubled Waters
The wind howls loudly and mercilessly in my right ear, making my hair swirl in an unforgiving tornado, whipping into my face. The violent water below crashes against the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. I stare down at my feet, watching as a drop of blood splatters onto the rocks. Ugh, I think, it’s bleeding again.

Lake of the Living Dead
First there was a virus. Millions of people died with an infection which attacked human brain cells. Symptoms started with an imbalance, people began to fall over, the weak, old and alone suffered as they were unable to get back up after a sudden vertigo-like feeling caused spills down the stairs, heads hit off bathroom sinks, days left alone led on the floor with a broken back or hip and no help from the relatives who had forgotten to check in on them. Another heart-breaking effect of the virus, peoples short-term memories began to vanish, as if erased from the brains hard-drive. Ovens were left unchecked, children forgotten in baths, families left devastated as routine things began to be overlooked.

Alt Hallows' Eve
After the terrifying times we've been living through as of late, this Halloween season feels different. Cheesy horror movies and plastic bats suddenly don't seem so scary when you're living through a global pandemic. Wearing zombie and vampire masks feels a little surreal after having to wear medical masks for a year and a half. Even with the usual Halloween festivities becoming viable again, it all feels a little... off.

Deep Treads in Burning Water
A young man sat upon a rock, looking out to the rippling waters in front of him. Eyes focused on the faint mirages laying underneath its crystal blue front. Taking a deep breath as the wind passed by his ears, taking in the sights and smells around him, eyes now focusing on the bluish tinted clouds above. He screwed his nose, sniffing violently before closing his eyes, shutting them as hard as he before rubbing the bridge of his nose with his fingers. A deep-seated yawn exited his throat after rubbing his nose for a few minutes, eyes opening to see a flash of light blinding him slightly. A crack in his neck and he was standing, looking down at the water before his as it glistened against the lit-up sky above. Scratching his upper lip with his teeth, he got closer to the water, eyes focusing on its splendor before his eyes locked with the reflections, trees swaying with the wind. He felt a sting in his legs, moving around the lake.

Till This Feels Like Reality
"Thank you Dr. Morrison" I say while leaving the doctors office. "Of course, Vincent. Hey one more thing" he says, stopping me from opening the door and leaving, "yes?" I asked. Dr. Morrison stands up and comes close to me, "I know your hallucinations can be scary. But remember...they can't physically interact with you. No matter how real it seems, they cannot touch you. Okay?" Dr. Morrison opens the door to his office, walking me out. "Thank you...I'll remember that." I leave his office and go to the waiting room where my girlfriend was sitting, waiting for me. "Carolyn" I said, gaining her attention. "Vincent!" She said while standing up to meet me by the door so we could leave. "How did it go? Any new coping skills I can help with?" She asked, while holding my hand walking out to our car. I love Carolyn, she's always so supportive of me and always wants to help. "Kind of, Dr. Morrison told me to remember that nothing in my hallucinations can physically touch me. They can't hurt me." She nodded her head "I'm sure that is comforting to hear." She gave me a smile and we got into our car.

IMBALANCE
There is a unique quietness to snow covered ground that makes me feel as if I’m the only person on earth. Standing here staring at the beautiful scenery winters storm has created, I want to stay in this moment for eternity. The howling wind rushing through the forest behind me brings with it a chill as it finds every possible route through my clothing. Body tensing from the cold just a reflex as it happens without notice. Lost in thought childhood memories transport me to a happier time. Nostalgia forces a tear to my eye with the realization of that time forever gone. Explanation cannot justify the feeling brought on by this experience. With the tear streaming down my face, a depression takes root as a faint noise draws me back to reality.
