Arachnid on the Appalachian
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years but one night, a candle burned in the window. This was the night that Officer Brown and his partner Hayes had been called out to the old Fuller farm for a noise disturbance. Brown sat next to a very bored Hayes that had a bad habit of noisily sipping away at one stale cup of Joe all night.

It's Been a Long, Long Time
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. I watch the cabin. I am in the forest. The westward facing structure stands alone on a tiny hill with nothing but a dirt path to the door and a fire pit to keep it company. Semidarkness paints the sky, bathing the red-roofed cabin with captivating magenta compliments. A burning candle is a sign of life. Something these woods have not seen for quite a long time.

The Maroon Chair
The Maroon Chair By Craig R. Hipkins The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. If anyone had been around, they might glance through the foggy glass pane and see nothing but an empty chair; a maroon-colored chair, tattered and frayed with age. However, if one looked closely enough, they might seem to perceive something disturbing. A slight movement from the backrest…a fluttering motion as if the chair might be breathing.

"We Were Once Like You"
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Jackson did not know this was an abandoned cabin and therefore didn't view the candlelight as ominous, but rather an indication that he would finally be safe.

Grumio Ash's last remarks for months while residing within the Pine Tree Mountain Cabin in the deepest of all darkness.
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. "The blackest of all blackness," "the deepest of all darkness," and "a stomping depth of a thousand ashes festering inside your nostrils because you have seen me."

A Cabin of Friends
“The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Where it used to be orange, the candle now bled a bright crimson. The Camp Muddlebrooke Counselors were confused; one even got a little nervous but she kept it inside. The woman who had died in this house had been dead for over sixty years, long before any of them were ever born, and nobody dared step foot on this land. As the group of counselors stare into the red light in the window, some of their childhood fear comes back to them in whispers on the wind. The story follows a woman who made a mistake, and the single mistake cost her her life. She’d forgotten to blow out the candle, and by the time she returned with a child from the camp, her home was in flames. Camp Muddlebrooke burned her there shortly after, adults and childrens alike. They watched her die on the steps silently. She didn’t even scream.

Family Vacation
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The candle illuminated the cobwebs in the room but the rest of the cabin remained in darkness. Little did anyone know, the candle was a signal. A sign.

Pack
Pack By: Maura Fisher-Bernstein The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The beams of light tapered from the wax, flickering against the dilapidated walls of the singular room, and illuminating the dusty, dank, dingy mess that lay around it.

Something In The Valley
The year is 2011, the sun had just gracefully set over the hills of Hollow's Valley, a small group of friends had hiked into the deep center of it's forests. As night had begun to fall they shared good memories, funny stories, and drinks together around their fire. Despite the claims and rumors of the horrid 'thing' that lives in the shadows of the hills and thrives through the forests at night. Daniel, the oldest of the three, was the most skeptical. The view and ambience of the valley was strikingly gorgeous and well known throughout the state of Kansas, which is why it was his idea to camp there. Though his friends were quite the opposite: superstitious, and cautious peoples. Yet somehow, he'd convinced Carl and Axel to go, through logic and reassurance. When they first arrived, they were as superstitious as ever, but now they'd mellowed out through the comfort of one another's company and the positive vibes of their memories. Hours and hours went by as their stories slowly became darker and meant to scare one another.

It Awaits Us
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window." There was word that someone had choked to death again and everyone in the cove who traveled to or lived near the inlet was adamant about finding the way out of the area. A call had been put out to search any and every structure and so, here we are, parked near the search and research site in the cabin, outside our homes, and .... well, waiting. We can not leave either. The campsites are just a small replication of our option... no, our potential for escaping. The girl down at the rookery, a photographer, was the last to be discovered... there was a black fungus seeping from her mouth and nostrils. No one has ever seen anything like it ... except, well there was a larvae bug. A larvae-laying bug that lays eggs inside the nostrils or any other moist opening on the body. (You should bathe often unless the only water is at the pond or open lake just there in the woods.) That cabin had been fairly empty... abandoned until now. The candle and all.. footprints and the sounds coming across the way here. Sounds like something knicking away at someone... the low burbling scream and all echoing in the darkening sky, so near. But the candle will only serve 'em for so long. We know that the black fungus takes hold in the darkness. The crawlers weren't the worst thing on the list at the mortician's office... they picked up a few new bodies that were loaded with the black running from their ears and streaming from... it's usually the uppermost extremities.. open sources, you know. But sometimes it gets into the lower spaces.. the wet most body area... like when someone laying open and waiting for an encounter... then catches the worst of infiltration. I think it's some kind of bug... like I said. But the professionals all got their way of figuring it out... tests and all. It just takes so long. Some time back it was the one that came up from the cellar of that same cabin. They brought out plastic bags... black plastic bags, then those dressed in toxic suits and all. The bags were taken to a lab and back here in the cove, a new law down. NO DEPARTURES. The tents are our best escape. (Keep the zippers shut during the dark and the colloidal spray... the mallow coating, slick during the day.) The moon is getting big overhead, and this is our worst hour... those first bodies were created by implants and no one is sure what the piercing is caused by... yet. Sure there's all sorts of bugs and there's all kinds of crazy people doing things, injecting instead of making cures; but it's... I think it's the bugs. But they were injecting us as the source... purging the harm out from us, but it's... it w-w-was put by the bugs... so many bugs from everyplace here now, in and on our everything. They have this sort of research lab going on in the cabin... tonight or longer, and other than injecting us... not vaccinating us, not the inoculation to be a cure-all, it's like they give us what they want to get out of us!
