The Diary
A couple of years after my mother's passing, I was given the task of going through what was left of her earthly possessions. The majority of them I was sure would no doubt end up thrown away. You see, my mom became a sort of packrat, as many people do when they get older. You could say she was a bit of a hoarder. Although, she wasn't like those people we are fascinated by on reality television. And, she didn't collect useless or frivolous things either. My mom collected books. Books of all shapes and forms, particularly old books. Many of which turned out to be valuable, so we were able to sell them and pay for her funeral. Because, as we all know, the business of burying someone's loved ones is the second most lucrative and overpriced trades in the world next to marriage.

The Mistress of the Void.
The Mistress of the Void. There I stood on the edge of the most beautiful body of water I had ever seen. Its shape was that of a perfect sphere, and at its center sat an island. A lonely piece of land with a great and solitary tree at its heart, thick with ink-black branches like deformed arms. Contrasting with the twisted ebon branches are the most beautifully brilliant red apples. These scarlet apples shined and pulsed with a violent vibrancy I have never beheld, they glowed like glass ornaments on a ghastly Christmas tree for the damned. The tree had many of these great dark branches bearing dozens of radiant fruit that shined like blisters on rotting flesh. The branches cast dark shadows on the tiny island that sleeps beneath it reaching past its timid shores.

Men Versus Mountains
Dear Jesse, I’m writing you a letter, because when you have something to say that sounds insane, it seems a little less insane when it’s written. Writing my words gives them an air of authority and thoughtfulness that they wouldn’t have if I just blurted all this out in a fit of tears and hyperventilation.

God Of Thunder
He found an empty corner of the bar; surely he had help not of this world to find such isolation that Friday evening. It was happy hour and all the white-collar slaves toasted to the worth of their empty lives. Slaves they were only they were too weak, too insensitive, too modern, yes that was the word Malcolm should use. They were too modern to know it. Society today is too modern.

Christmas Tree Shortage and Zombies
Christmas Tree Shortage and Zombies By Kami Bryant When I heard on the radio that there was a Christmas tree shortage, and that people could expect to pay three times as much this year on their tree, I paid it no mind. I also, didn’t pay much attention to the radio, when the newscaster was describing an affliction that had infected a local man, and that the unidentified man was showing signs of so-called zombie-like symptoms plus vomiting.

Hidden Forever
I have fortunately come across some money. A large sum of money, life changing to be exact. It is not my money though, and I know people will be after me for this money. Unbeknownst to them though, they will never find me, or the location of the money. I keep all my findings and their locations written in my small black notebook. This isn’t the first time I came into some money, of course not this large of an amount, but it did not end well for me then, and they almost got my small black notebook. This time I am certain they will not find me, or my money. I think I can call it my money now. I mean hey, who’s going to take it from me, if they can’t find me?

The Demon Inside
Lily’s parents had always been the church every Sunday type of people, until her mom started getting sick anyway. Lily had an incredibly active imagination and often came away from church services, with an impending fear of fire, brimstone and demons. Not because the preacher gave a terrifying sermon, but because Lily was so bored, she would start to read books of the Bible, especially Revelations.

Get Them Out
The darkening evening gloom pressed against the dining room windows while Lily sat at the table finishing left over school work from earlier. She kept trying to focus, but as it grew darker she became more and more agitated. No surprise there, first grade homework wasn’t all that exciting, and Lily’s attention easily wavered as she imagined all sorts of horrible things creeping out of the woods. They would be well hidden now by the dark shadows that lurked there.

Payback
She waited in the shadows, staring at the five teenagers through red eyes. She stood as still as a statue, not wanting to draw any attention to herself. After a few moments, the group separated, three went one way and two went the opposite. Her prey was within the pair.
